GOLMOKGIL Mixtape #40 – Blessing

안녕하세요, Blessing! 만나서 반가워요. 사람들은 당신을 Part Time Cook의 메인 맴버로 이미 많이 알고 있는데, 최근에는 디제잉도 많이 하는 것 같군요. 언제부터 시작한 건가요?
6년 전에 처음 시작했어요. 저는 저의 고향인 Durban에서 매주 힙합 이벤트 들을 계획하곤 했었는데, 랩퍼들은 공연 신청이 많이 오는데, 정작 음악을 틀 DJ가 없는 경우가 허다 했어요. 그 당시에 저도 랩을 했었는데 디제잉까지 맡아서 하기로 했고, 그렇게 디제잉을 시작하게 되었어요.

요즘 케익샵에서는 Kwaito 장르의 음악을 자주 트는 것 같던데, 맞나요? Kwaito 장르에 대한 설명도 같이 부탁드릴게요. Blessing씨의 홈타운에서의 영향력은 어떤가요?
Kwaito 힙합은 남아메리카 요하네스버그에서 시작된 장르에요. 주로 1980년대의 힙합 음악에서 접할 수 있는 랩 비트 스타일과 Bubblegum Pop이라고 불리던 음악 스타일이 합쳐져서 발전된 구조라고나 할까요. Kwaito는 당시에 남아프리카에서 panstula street dance 문화와 함께 youth movement를 이끈 꽤 영향력 있는 음악 스타일이에요.

그렇군요. 아직 Kwaito가 생소한 독자들을 위해 추천 해줄만한 앨범이나 아티스트가 있을까요?
TKZee’s – Phalafala & Halloween 이 두 앨범을 강력히 추천합니다! 반드시 들어봐야 할 작품들이에요 여러분. 하하 Trompies – Sigyangengoma 라는 앨범도 꼭 들어보시길.

Durban에서 열었던 파티들에 대해서 좀더 들어보고 싶어요. Blessing 씨가 고향에 방문했을 때 가족 분들(특히 Blessing의 할머님 GoGo까지)과 찍은 영상을 인상 깊게 봤던 기억이 있어요. 가족 분들과 고향 사람들이 다들 무척 유쾌해 보이던데요. 어떤 곳인가요?
(웃음) 저의 고향에서 파티를 할 때 가장 중요한 점은 Braai 가 빠져서는 안된다는 거에요. (Braai는 남아프리카식 바비큐 요리다.) 좋은 음식이 없다면, 좋은 파티도 없어요. 남아프리카에서는 모두를 초대해서 하우스 파티를 계속 열어왔어요. 파티장소가 정해지면 거대한 텐트를 빌려서 마당 전체에 펼쳐 놓고 그 안에서 파티를 했죠. 그리고 때에 따라 다르긴 하지만, 종종 염소나 양을 잡아 사람들하고 다같이 나눠 먹을 때도 있었어요. 음식을 먼저 먹은 후 다같이 미친 듯이 춤추고 놀았어요.

Blessing이 Durban의 힙합 씬 에서 중요한 일들을 많이 해왔다고 들었어요. 랩을 하신지  거의 15년 정도 된다고 들었는데, 처음 본인의 노래를 써본 것은 언제인가요?
정확히 기억 나지는 않지만, 9살 정도부터 프리스타일 랩을 시작했던 것 같아요. 처음 곡을 만든 것은 10살 때였는데, 사실 대학생이 될 때 까지는 음악을 그렇게 진지하게 생각하지 않았어요.
그러다가 2006년에 Life Check라는 Youth development와 함께 컴필레이션 앨범을 처음으로 제작했어요. Life Check의 운영자인 Ewokand와 Natasha Hosken은 그 당시 매달 힙합 쇼케이스 공연을 운영하고 있었는데, 그곳에 초대 받은 이후부터 차근차근 Durban에서 인지도를 쌓아가기 시작했어요.

작년에 발표한 Public Interest라는 앨범도 상당한 주목을 받았어요. 성공적인 데뷔였다고 생각하시나요?
그럼요. 작년에 발표한 데뷔 앨범이 Durban에서 매년 열리는 Original Material awards에서 올해의 앨범으로 뽑혔었어요. 정말 감사한 일이죠.

그 앨범 정말 좋아해요. 개인적으로는 남아메리카 힙합 스타일 음악들을 즐겨 듣는데, 몰라서는 안될 아티스트는 누가 있을 까요?
요즘 남아프리카의 힙합 스타일들이 개인적으로 정말 좋은 것 같아요. 그 중에서 뽑자면 HCL, KO, DreamTeamDMN, Zakwe 정도를 권하고 싶네요. 정확히 힙합 음악을 작곡하는 분은 아니지만, Toya DeLazy 라는 아티스트도 꼭 기억해두시길 바래요.

감사합니다. 한국에서 공연을 할 때 가장 선호하는 장소는 어디인가요?
디제잉은 Cakeshop, 라이브 공연은 In2Deep 에서 하는 것을 즐겨요. 두 클럽 다 사운드 시스템도 좋고 항상 좋은 관중과 분위기를 이끌어 내는 것 같아요.

새로운 앨범 작업을 하고 계시다구요? 언제쯤 들어볼 수 있을까요?
제가 있는 크루(그는 현재 Part Time Cooks 라는 힙합 듀오의 맴버로 활동 하고 있다.)에서 새로운 작업을 하고 있는 것은 맞아요. 하지만 이 앨범 작업에 뭔가 마감기한을 정해두고 대충 마무리 짓고 싶지는 않네요. 많은 준비 과정 후 좋은 노래가 만들어지면 릴리즈 하고 싶어요. PTC는 그냥 그런 패스트 푸드점이 아니니까요 !

기대하고 있을게요. 이번 골목길 믹스테잎에 대해서도 설명 부탁드려요.
이번 믹셋에서는 저의 고향 Durban의 클래식한 힙합 노래들을 소개하고 싶어요. 그리고 단순히 Kwaito 음악을 다룬 세트가 아닌 제가 아티스트가 되가는 과정에서 영향을 주고 또 반대로 영감을 받았던 스타일들을 보여주고 싶네요. 당신이 Black Moss를 랩퍼이자 동시에 디제이로 보려 하듯이 이 믹셋을 들으면 감을 잡으실 수 있을 거에요.

좋은 믹스 테잎 정말 감사합니다. 2015년에는 어떤 계획들이 있으신가요?
제 비즈니스와 관련해서 서울로 옮겨와서 좀 더 집중할 생각이에요. Part time cooks의 죽이는 앨범도 릴리즈 될거고요. 올해는 디제잉 보다는 랩을 더 하고 싶은 개인적인 소망도 있어요 !

What’s up, Blessing!? Most people here know you for your work with Part Time Cooks as an MC, but lately you’ve been DJ’ing a bit as well. When did you first start doing it?
I started Djing about 6 years ago. We used to organise hip-hop events in my hometown Durban every week. Sometimes there would be a ton of rappers ready to perform but no DJ’s to play their songs, so I started out being that rapper that cued everybody’s songs in.

You play a lot of Kwaito at the Cakeshop parties.  Can you tell us a bit about the origins of Kwaito? How influential is it amongst the various youth movements in your hometown? 
Kwaito originated in the townships of South Africa. It basically was a progression from what our parents called Bubblegum Pop and the trending rap style heard in Hip-Hop music around the mid 80s. Kwaito was seen as a youth movement because it went side by side with Panstula Street Dance culture which was big in every South African township.

What would you say is the essential Kwaito album for anybody out there trying to get into the genre?
TKZee’s -Phalafala & Halloween albums are definitely staples. Those two albums are definitely a must have, bro.
Another one I can think of off top is Trompies – Sigyangengoma.

Walk me through your typical party back home. I’ve seen video of you visiting your family and everybody from your nieces all the way up to GoGo ( Blessing’s Grandma ) look like they know how to have a good time.
[Laughs] I’d say the first thing to note about a party back home is there must be a braai (South African BBQ). No food- no party is generally the rule. We do house parties where pretty much everybody is invited. Depending on the occasion, we usually rent out a huge tent and pitch it across the entire front or back yard and that where the party goes down. Also dependent on the occassion we may even slaughter a goat, sheep or cow to feed the community in attendance. After the meal,  the music, drinking, and dance commences.

I know you’re heavy into the Hip-Hop scene out in Durban. You’ve been rhyming for like 15 years now, right? What was the first time you free-styled or wrote a verse? How old were you when you put out your first song and how did you get it out to people in your city?
I think I started freestyling when I was 9 or so.  I really dont remember. The first rap song I ever wrote was when I was about 10 years old , but I never took it seriously until I got to university. I recorded my first song in 2006 and it was featured in a complilation which was distributed by a Youth Development Initiative called Life Check. They ran a monthly live Hip-Hop showcase and when Ewokand and Natasha Hosken, the founders of the program, asked me to be a host of the showcase, I blew up from there and my music gained a following in Durban.

Your album Public Interest won a pretty serious award right before Part Time Cooks formed last year, right?
Yeah man I was blessed to have my debut album awarded the Album of the year at the Original Material awards in Duban.

I love a lot of the South African Hip-Hop you’ve showed me… Hit us with some names of people to check out.
I’m loving the music that is coming out of SA Hip-Hop right now. Cats to check out are HCL, KO, DreamTeamDBN, Zakwe, just to mention a few. Plus, even though  she isn’t really making Hip-Hop, check out Toya DeLazy killing it back home.

Where is your favorite place to perform ( rapping or DJ’ing ) here in Korea?
I love DJing at Cakeshop and I love performing at Club In2Deep. The sound at both those venues is on point and the vibe is always right.

You outdid me with your verse on ‘Loser.’ If I can admit that, tell me one verse I crushed you on so far on our upcoming album, Baker’s Dozen. [laughter]
[Laughter] Hmmmm… I dont know man. I might give you a tie on “Keep Cooking” and “Seoul Summer.” But I think what people appreciate is our styles are so different and blend well on every single song. It’s really difficult for anyone to put our verses up against each other and say one out-rapped the other. Often I feel like the song wins, you feel me? If that wasn’t the case I wouldn’t be rapping with you.

When the fuck are we going to finish this album? Heard you’re working on a new album right now. Can you tell us a little about it?
The Part Time Cooks album will be done when its done. PTC don’t work at a fast-food restaurant.
Our crew, Part Time cooks is planning to release a new album, yes, but we are not going to fix a due date on that. We’re going to release it when we are perfectly ready for it. PTC don’t work as a fast food restaurant [laughter].

Can you tell us a bit about your mix for Golmokgil?
I have decided to make a mix of songs I consider to be classic in Durban Hip-Hop history. Instead of making a kwaito mix I’m letting people listen to my playlist, my influences as I was comimg up as an artist. When you look at Black Moss as a rapper or DJ you will get a feel from this mix of where it is that I come from.

What are your plans for 2015?
I plan on moving up to Seoul in the summer to focus more on my music career. We (Part Time Cooks) will be dropping an epic album. I think I would like to DJ less and rap more in 2015.
