A true legend, we are extremely pleased to present Andrés aka DJ Dez on his first visit to Korea at Cakeshop!

디트로이트 하우스와 힙합의 우두머리 Andrés로 알려진 DJ Dez의 삶은 음악이 숙명과 같았다. 디트로이트 재즈씬의 원조 연주자로 Mongo Santamaria, Santana 그리고 Cachao López와 같은 거장들과 함께 퍼커션을 연주하고 노래했던 Humberto ‘Nengue’ Hernandez의 아들로, 그는 세살때 그의 첫번째 드럼을 갖게 되었고 ‘Motor City’의 풍성한 음악적 배경속에서 성장하게 되었다. 캘리포니아에서도 성장하게 된 Andrés는 그의 가족과 함께 디트로이트로 다시 돌아가기 전에, 캘리포니아의 미성년자 파티씬에서 그의 DJ잉에 입문하게 된다. 이미 입증된 crate digger 그리고 바이닐을 기록하고 보관하는 전문가로 그는 빠르게 그 자신을 Kenny Dixon Jr (aka Moodymann), Amp Fiddler 그리고 그의 힙합 크루인 Slum Village에 합류하기를 권했던 J Dilla와 같은 씬을 이끄는 몇몇 엘리트들과 어깨를 나란히 견주는 반열에 올려놓았다.
Slum Village의 새로히 만들어낸 전기적인 부드러움으로 미국 랩 판도의 혁명을 일으킨 것과 나란히, Andrés는 90년대 후반부터 쭉 고향의 유산들을 탐색하기 시작했다. 그는 그의 레코드 가게 옛친구와 연결되어 KDJ에서 그루비한 12인치 바이닐을 발표하게되었고, Mahogani Music과 함께 높은 다작 앨범을 진행하는 관계로 발전하게 된다. 세개의 호평을 받은 Mahogani에서의 full length 앨범 발표후, 그는 디트로이트 뮤직 서킷에서 가장 다재다능한 인물 중 하나로 꼽히는 지도상에 위치하게 되었고, 2012년에는 미래의 클래식으로 꼽힐만한 “New for U” 12″를 발표한 그 자신의 La Vida 레이블을 설립하게 된다.

Detroit house and hiphop don Andrés aka DJ Dez was destined for a life in music. The son of Humberto ‘Nengue’ Hernandez, an original player on Detroit’s jazz scene who sang and played percussion with the likes of Mongo Santamaria, Santana andCachao López, he got his first drum set aged three, and was raised on the Motor City’s rich musical history. Partly brought up in California, Andrés cut his teeth DJ-ing on the Cali underage party scene, before moving back to the Detroit with his family. Already a certified crate digger and vinyl archivist, he quickly found himself rubbing shoulders with some of the scene’s elite – Kenny Dixon Jr (aka Moodymann), Amp Fiddler and J Dilla, who invited Andrés to join his hip hop crew Slum Village.
Parallel to revolutionising the US rap landscape with the new-found electrified smoothness of Slum Village, Andrés started to explore his hometown’s house legacy from the late 90’s onwards. He hooked up with his former record store friend to release a string of freewheeling house 12-inches on KDJ, leading up to a highly prolific relationship with Mahogani Music. After three acclaimed full-length albums for Mahogani, which really put him on the map as one of the most versatile figures on the Detroit dance music circuit, in 2012 he launched his own imprint La Vida with the future classic “New for U” 12”.
