체 게바라의 젊은 시절을 다룬 영화 모터사이클 다이어리에 이런 대사가 나온다. “어떻게 한 번도 가보지 않은 곳을 그리워할 수 있죠?” 내가 존재하지 않았던 시절 혹은 장소에 매료되어 한결같이 동경하는 사람에게는 묘한 비현실적 매력과 서늘한 집념이 스며져 나온다. 여기 뉴욕 브루클린 출신의 한 사내는 자신의 작업물에 꾸준히 특정 시절에 대한 애정을 표현해왔다. 자신의 음악과는 어떠한 연관성도 찾아볼 수 없는 영화배우 Tom Cruise 이름의 앞 철자만 맞바꾼 Com Truise 라는 아티스트명을 달고서. 뮤지션 Com Truise 는 10년 넘게 음악생활을 해 온 Seth Haley 의 또 다른 자아이며, 2011년 디트로이트의 저명한 레이블 Ghostly International 을 통해 첫 EP ‘Cyanide Sisters’ 를 발매 후 성공적인 평을 받으며 씬에서 자신만의 확고한 입지를 굳혀왔다. 그의 음악은 얼마전 새로 개봉하기도 한 ‘빽 투더 퓨쳐’ 를 연상시킨다. 느리지만 분명한 비트 위에 고개를 끄떡거리게 만드는 세련된 신스 사운드는 안개낀 밤 축축한 아스팔트 위를 드라이브 할 때 더없이 좋은 BGM이 되어준다. 더불어 그의 이름만큼이나 위트있는 요소들은 음악 군데군데 배치되어 전반적으로 차가운 무드 위에 인간적이고 아날로그적인 매력을 토핑한다. 미래지향적 태도로 과거를 살던 80년대의 젊은이들은 그들 미래 속 지금의 우리를 동경했지만, 문화적으로 새로움과 낭만이 흘러 넘치던 그 시기를 마음껏 누려보지 못한 지금의 우리는 그 때를 막연히 그리워할 뿐이다. FAKE VIRGIN은 오랫동안 우리의 위시리스트 안에서 자신의 차례가 오기만을 기다린 아티스트 Com Truise 의 첫 내한을 드디어 여러분들께 선보이게 되어 몹시 기쁘다.

There is a line from the movie Motercycle Diary which is story about young Che Guevara’s life. “How is it possible to feel nostalgia for a world I never knew?” It is not difficult to feel mysteriously surreal charm and cooled down tenacity from the person consistently longing for a certain era or place that he has never been to. Here’s a guy who has been showing huge affection to a certain time on his works with the name of Com Truise that is from the actor Tom Cruise which obviously doesn’t have to do with his music. Com Truise is one of the many personas of producer and designer Seth Haley, born and raised in upstate New York. The first Com Truise release was the Cyanide Sisters EP where mellow stone-outs like “Sundriped” and “Slow Peels” sat next to harder IDM bangers and bumpy alt-funk trips. His music undoubtedly reminds us of ‘Back To The Future’ which is rereleased on 21 Oct 2015. Polished catchy synth sound on slow but articulate beats is one of the best night drive bgm on the foggy damp freeway. Also, some witty analogue elements topped on the robotlike vibe give us sort of Com Truise style humanism. Young people with futuristic attitude in ’80s yearned for being us who are living in thier future now, but we just repeatedly miss that era which was full of freshness and romanticism where we’ve never been to. FAKE VIRGIN is extremely happy to finally announce Com Truise’s very first S.Korea show in 2016 Jan.
