One of techno’s true underground heroes, Function, real name Dave Sumner, has been DJing and making music for over 15 years. 언더그라운드 테크노의 영웅으로 불리는 Function, 본명은 Dave Sumner, 15년 넘게 디제이와 프로듀싱 활동을 해왔다.

Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno music when Jeff Mills held a residency (as well as his own first) at the Limelight in the early 90s. Dave started to produce music and from the mid-90s onwards, put out music on Damon Wild’s Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint.

Together with Karl O’Connor aka Regis he worked as Portion Reform, putting out uncompromising music on Downwards and becoming the only non-Birmingham producer to release on the label.

More recently, Dave moved to Berlin and, still working with O’Connor, set up the acclaimed Sandwell District imprint.

Function은 90년대 초 디트로이트 출신의 미국을 대표하는 DJ 제프 밀스(Jeff Mills)가 레지던트로 활동하던 뉴욕의 유명 테크노 클럽 라임라이트(Limelite)에서 레지던트 디제이로 활동하며 경력을 쌓았다.

이후 레지스(Regis)와 함께 Portion Reform이라는 이름으로 음악 활동을 시작했다. 2008년에는 베를린으로 활동무대를 옮긴 후 광적인 지지 세력들을 등에 업고 15년간 10여장의 EP 앨범을 발표해왔으며, 전설적인 레이블이자 프로젝트인 Sandwell District로 많은 사람들에게 알려지기에 이른다.

2013년에는 데뷔앨범인 인큐베이션(Incubation)을 독일 최고의 테크노 레이블인 Ostgut Ton 에서 발매했다. 전통적인 전자음악을 토대로 뒤틀린 클럽 트랙과 고조되는 스트링 사운드, 복잡하게 연결된 멜로디 라인들로 무장한 그의 음악은 팬들을 모던한 소리의 세계로 인도하며 강력한 새로운 테크노 음악을 표현한다.
