일약 떠오른 풋워크는 마땅히 돌아가야 하는 몫이 그 모든 인물들에게 주어지지 않은 채, 한 때 지역 간 전투에 쓰인 이 음악은 지난 몇 년 전부터 세계적인 댄스플로어에서의 존재감을 지니게 되었다.

시카고의 프로듀서 RP Boo는 풋워크 세계의 전반을 지배하는 크루 베이스의 역학 관계에서 크게 벗어나 움직인다. 그리고 그의 어린 상대들이 때때로 더 많은 빛을 보았을 동안에 그는 1997년 ‘Baby Come On’ 트랙으로 말그대로 풋워크라는 장르를 발명했으며 게토 하우스, 부티 하우스, 그리고 주크에서부터 진화된 사운드를 개척했다는 사실엔 의심의 여지가 없을 것이다.

다른 풋워크 창시자처럼 그는 전설적인 하우스와 주크 댄스 클리셰인 House-O-Matics와의 연대 속에서 DJ Deeon, DJ Milton, 그리고 DJ Slugo와 함께 디제잉하며 프로덕션으로 빠져들었다.

RP Boo, Traxman, 그리고 DJ Clent는 그들의 시카고 게토 하우스에 대한 끈끈한 관계를 Dance Mania라는 각인으로 연결시켰다. 그리고 그러한 영향으로 템포를 올리는 예지력과 새로운 템플릿을 제작하는 능력을 겸비하여 예전의 철저하고 엄격했던 스타일에서 과감하고 새로운 구조로 마구 비틀어 놓았다.

2013년에 엄청난 앨범이었던 ‘Legacy’가 Planet MU에서 발표되었고, 이는 지난 10년 동안 RP Boo가 내놓은 베스트만을 모은 풀렝스 앨범이었다. 2015년 그들은 그의 아카이브를 다시 발굴하여 마침내 ‘Baby Come On’을 수록한 Classics Vol. 1 EP를 내놓는다.

최근 몇 년간, 정신없는 160 bpm의 풋워크 사운드는 타계한 DJ Rashad와 DJ Spinn, 후에 Boo 역시 큰 역할을 했던 Teklife로 환생하기 전 Ghettotekinitianz의 설립자들과 같은 사신들을 통해 세계를 가로질렀다. 그리고 장르가 커져가면서 RP Boo는 언제나 풋워크의 대부라는 지위를 유지해왔다.

The meteoric rise of footwork has been well documented in recent years, but even as this once regional battle music has assumed an international dancefloor presence, not all of its figures have received their proper due.

Chicago producer RP Boo operates largely outside of the crew-based dynamics that dominate much of the footwork world, and while that means his younger counterparts occasionally receive more shine, there’s no denying that it was he who quite literally invented footwork with his 1997 track ‘Baby Come On’ and pioneered the sound, which evolved out of ghetto house, booty house, and juke.

Like many of footwork’s originators, he was brought through into production through associations with the legendary House and Juke dance clique House-O-Matics, DJing alongside DJ Deeon, DJ Milton, and DJ Slugo.

RP Boo, Traxman, and DJ Clent, took their close ties to the ghetto house sound of Chicago, its Dance Mania imprint, and bended and twisted those influences from four-to-the-floor rigidity into bold new structures, having the foresight to bump up the tempo, establishing a new template.

Heavily reliant on interwoven vocal samples and, relative to his peers, less on rattling percussion, his tracks have a weightless, labyrinthine feel, as exultations for the dancers hold conversations with wailing soul samples and various grunts and shouts.

In 2013, the incredible ‘Legacy’ was released on Planet MU, a full-length collecting many of the best RP Boo offerings from the previous decade. In 2015, they mined his archives once again, issuing Classics Vol. 1 EP which finally put ‘Baby Come On’ back on wax.

While these records have been widely celebrated, it’s important to note that Boo isn’t content to simply be a historical footnote. He’s continued innovating, and his celebrated 2015 album Fingers, Bank Pads, And Shoe Prints is proof that even as footwork has spread across the world, RP Boo continues to maintain relevance and great importance.

In recent years, the frenetic 160 bpm footwork sound has traversed the globe through the ambassadorship of the late DJ Rashad, and DJ Spinn, founders of Ghettotekinitianz and its later reincarnation as Teklife of which Boo also played an important part, and as the genre has grown, RP Boo has always held it down as the Godfather of Footwork.
