Nukid is a regular on the Seoul Dj scene, actively pushing underground music in Seoul Busan and Incheon with his latest ventures : Stoned Project and Tanzabend.

NUKID는 Deep House를 플레이하는 디제이이다. 서울에서의 활발한 활동 외에도 Stoned Project, Tanzabend 등을 통해 인천, 부산의 언더그라운드 씬에서 다양한 역할을 하고 있다.

디제이를 할 때 가장 즐거운 점은?
모두가 음악을 느끼기 시작하고 함께 즐기며 서로의 느낌을 춤으로써 공유하고 그렇게 클럽안의 모든 사람이 하나의 유기체처럼 느껴지는 그 에너지가 좋다.

디제이를 시작 하게 된 계기는?
내가 태어났을 때에 우리집은 레코드 샵을 하고 있었다. 난 꽤 많은 음악을 듣게 되었고, 그러나 전공자는 아니었다. 악보도 볼 줄 모르는 내게 DJ는 가장 쉽게 음악이라는 것을 다룰 수 있는 직업이었고, 2001년에 배드룸DJ로 시작했을 때는 이렇게 깊은 세계가 존재하는지 당연히 몰랐다.

해외에서 활동해 본 경험은? 한국과는 어떤 차이점이 있나?
아쉽게도 해외에서 활동한 적은 없다. 언젠가 꼭 기회가 생겼으면 좋겠다.

현재 한국의 언더씬에는 어떤 변화가 있다고 생각하나?
유행따라 생기는 클럽들은 얼마 못가 폐업하고 있고 또 그만큼 생기는 클럽들은 자기 색이 없거나 무언가가 부족해서 또 다시 없어진다. 최근 서울의 언더 그라운드는 많은 베뉴를 잃었고 남아있는 언더그라운드 클럽은 손에 꼽는다고 할 수 있다. 틀 곳이 없어진 디제이들은 파티를 만들고 대안 공간을 찾아 나선다. 좋은 일이라면 딥 하우스가 크게 유행함에 따라 클럽 안에서 서브로 여는 언더그라운드 프로그램들이 많이 생겼다. 그리고 케잌샵의 약진은 멋진 일이다. 그로 인해 다양성이 생겼다. 보일러 룸과 비슷한 컨셉트의 에어콘 룸이라던가 Mixmixtv같은 좋은 음악 매체가 생겼다. 덕분에 한국의 언더그라운드 DJ들을 방안에서 볼 수 있게 되었다. 부산에서도 딥 하우스나 테크노 파티들이 열리기 시작하였다. 해외 언더그라운드 디제이들의 내한 체널은 많이 늘었다. 덕분에 언더 그라운드 디제이들의 수는 늘어났고 선곡의 질 또한 높아지고 있다고 생각한다. 혹자는 해외 디제이가 없으면 안되는 한국 언더그라운드 씬이라고 비평하지만, 보고 좋은 영향을 받고 있는 사람들이 존재하는 이상, 내한은 긍정적이다. 작년에 비해 새로운 점은 지금으로썬 미디어의 발전 외에는 그다지 없다.

본인의 음악 색깔을 간단히 정의해본다면?
굳이 색으로 표현하자면 진파랑색. 신비하면서도 순수하고 깊은 느낌이 좋다. 최근 탐미주의적인 성향이 강해져서인지 아름다운 음악을 좋아한다.

프로듀싱이나 작곡활동도 하고 있는지?
올해 목표가 프로듀싱을 시작하는 것이다. 사실 올해는 정말 어떤 희생을 해서라도 해봐야겠다고 생각중이다.

요즘 가장 즐겨 듣는 트랙은?
Gusgus – Crossfade (Konstantin Sibold Remix)

언제 틀어도 지겹지않고 좋다고 생각하는 트랙은?(오래된 곡도 상관 없음)
Agoria – For One Hour (Original Mix) 이런 걸 어떻게 만들지? 라는 생각이 든다.

위 질문의 답변 외에 혹시 하고싶은 말이 있다면 자유롭게 한마디.
2011년 말에 런칭된 “인천” 로컬 파티 프로모팅 크루이다. 대부분 인천에 연고를 두고 있는 12인으로 이루어져 있으며 계속 맴버가 늘고 있다. 섹스코드로 점철된 하위 문화로 오해받고 있는 파티에 대한 대안 모델 제시와 배급을 목적으로 하고 있으며, 1년에 6개월동안을 시즌으로 두어 활동하고 있다. 최근엔 웹 컨텐츠 강화에 신경쓰고 있으며 대표적인 컨텐츠로 Resident Advisor에서 나온 REAL SCENES라는 다큐멘터리 연작을 1달에 1번씩 번역하여 자막본을 배포하고 있기도 하다. 또한 올해는 인천에 있는 다른 장르의 아티스트와 함께 인천 남구에서 마련해 준 “그린빌라”라는 곳에서 같이 거처를 두고 여러가지 예술 협업을 진행하고 있다.

What is your favourite aspect of DJing?
I love it when people genuinely enjoy themselves and feel the music. It almost feels like everyone inside the club becomes one. I love to feel that energy

How did you start DJing?
When I was a kid my family owned a record shop. I listened to a lot of music but i didn’t study it. Because I couldn’t read music, DJing felt like the easiest way to get into it. When I started Djing in my bedroom in 2001 I didn’t realise that DJing was that deep of a universe.

What do you think is different between the club scene in Korea and other countries?
I have never been to another country yet. I hope I can get the chance to go soon.

Do you think there has been an evolution in the Korean underground scene?
Clubs that only follow trends never last long, and usually the new clubs that are opening don’t have their own atmosphere and also end up closing. A lot of underground venues in Seoul have now closed and you can count the venues left on the fingers of one hand. Deep house becoming more and more mainstream created a semi underground scene. And the rapid progression of Cakeshop is really impressive. A lot of diversity came with it. Several “boiler room like” shows (Aircon room and MixmixTv) also appeared. Thanks to those you can now watch the korean underground deejays in your room. Even in Busan some deep house parties are being organized. There are also more opportunities for underground foreign DJs to play in korea. Due to all this more and more underground deejays appeared and the quality of music selection also increased. Some people point that except when a big foreign name comes to play in Korea, Koreans are not interested in the underground scene, but I think that through these foreign deejays a lot of people got introduced and took a liking to higher quality music. If we were to compare to last year, I think the only change has been the way music is delivered on the underground scene.

What do you think is your musical color?
If I really have to define a color I would say deep blue. While a bit mysterious it is pure and I like the deep meaning it has. Recently I have been a lot more receptive to the beauty in all things and this also translates to music.

Do you also produce?
My goal this year is to start producing. I really want to give it my all.

What is the classic track that you never get tired of listening to?
Agoria – For One Hour (Original Mix). I don’t understand how they made this track.

Introduce us to your project STONEDPROJECT.
Stonedproject is an “Incheon” party promotion crew created in 2011. Composed of 12 members based mainly in Incheon. Our crew has been growing. We are trying to change people’s vision of the party/clubbing scene which is sometimes looked down upon because of its affiliation to sex. We are also focusing a lot on web content. We provide korean subtitles for Resident Advisor’s “REAL SCENES” documentaries every month. This year we will make collaborations with artists coming from a wide range of horizons. these events will be held at the “Green Villa”. This venue is being lent to us by the south Incheon Centre.
