Andow is a Korean Dj based in Seoul, part of 360 sounds and Co founder of the Deadend Crew.

Andow는 서울을 대표하는 문화단체 360 Sounds 소속의 DJ이자 Deadend 크루의 공동 설립자이다.

디제이를 할 때 가장 즐거운 점은?
나도 정말 좋아하는 트랙을 플레이했을 때 한 공간에 모인 사람들과 함께 열광하는 그 맛이 가장 즐거운 점이다.

디제이를 시작 하게 된 계기는?
1999년부터 중고등학교 재학시절 한국 힙합의 성지라 불리는 클럽 Master Plan에 공연을 보러 거의 매주갔었다. MC들의 공연도 멋있었지만 나에게 더 큰 관심은 당시 공연 시작전 웜업을 위해 무대를 서거나 MC들 뒤에서 백업을 해주는 DJ들이었다. 당시 자주보며 우러러보던 DJ들이 360 Sounds의 Soulcape와 Deadend의 Smood였는데 성인이 되면서 자연스레 알게되면서 DJ를 시작하게 되었다.

해외에서 활동해 본 경험은?
2004년부터 2009년까지 시카고에서 활동했다. 정식 데뷔도 시카고에서했고 클럽, 라운지 등에서 레지던트 활동을하며 여러 파티 및 페스티벌에도 참여했다.

한국과는 어떤 차이점이 있나?
정말 다양한 장르의 음악들이 공존하였지만 일단 하우스 음악의 본고장 답게 하우스 음악에 대한 리스펙을 갖고 전통을 지키려는 DJ들이나 클럽들이 많다. 그리고 서울과 비교해서 어림잡아도 수십배는 많은 DJ들이 있다보니 경쟁이 치열해서 자기 프로모션에 많은 힘을 쓰는 문화가 한국과는 가장 큰 차이점이라 생각한다. 지금은 사운드클라우드나 믹스클라우드같은 웹과 모바일을 이용한 프로모션이 가능했지만 그 당시엔 믹스 CD나 데모를 모든 DJ들이 활발히 제작해서 레코드 스토어같은 곳에서 무료 배포하거나 프로모터들에게 직접 발품을 팔지않으면 경쟁에서 밀리는 구조이다보니 DJ들 스스로도 성장이되고 좋은 현상이었다고본다.

현재 한국의 언더씬에는 어떤 변화가 있다고 생각하나?
한국의 언더그라운드씬을 살펴보면 2000년 초반에 대표적으로 Afroking 파티가 있었고 2000년대 중반부턴 360 Sounds가 있었다. 클럽 역시 Cargo나 Tool, VIA같이 언더그라운드를 지향한 훌륭한 클럽들이 있었지만 이 중에 아직까지 살아남은건 360 Sounds외엔 없다. 그러다 2년전부터 Deadend, Bass Attack, BNS 크루같은 로컬 크루나 Cakeshop이란 공간이 생기면서 이제서야 언더그라운드란 씬이 탄탄해지는 느낌이다.

이번 골목길을 위한 믹스를 간단히 소개해본다면?
기존에 360 Sounds 파티나 Deadend 파티에서 들려주던 음악 색깔과는 다른 좀더 chill한 음악들로 구성해봤다.

프로듀싱이나 작곡활동도 하고 있는지?
프로듀서로서 활동은 하고있지 않으나 DJ셋을 위한 리에딧이나 메쉬업 등은 활발히 작업하는 편이다.

요즘 가장 즐겨 듣는 트랙은?
집에 있을땐 이번 믹스셋에도 넣은 PARTYNEXTDOOR의 트랙들을 요새 제일 즐겨듣는다. 그 중에서도 West District.

언제 틀어도 지겹지않고 좋다고 생각하는 트랙은?(오래된 곡도 상관 없음)
고등학교 때 본 영화 Barbershop에 삽입된 트랙 Marvin Gaye의 Got To Give It Up. 당시 턴테이블도 없으면서 바로 LP로 구매했던 기억이 난다. 지금도 디스코나 소울을 플레이하는 파티가 있다면 꼭 플레이하는 트랙이다. 바로 이 장면!

What is your favourite aspect of DJing?
When I play a track that I like and every one in the place really digs it with me.

How did you start DJing?
Almost every week in middle and high school school I would check out shows at the Holy Land of Korean Hip-Hop: Club Master Plan. I really enjoyed watching the MCs but the Deejays warming up and backing them was more interesting to me. When I got older, I got to know Soulscape from 360 Sound and Smood from Deadend. Back then, they were at Club Master Plan, and so naturally they started deejaying. I am really so proud to be in the same crew with the people that I worshiped when I was teenager.

Have you ever performed abroad?
From 2004 to 2009 I deejayed in Chicago. I was a resident in several clubs, lounges, and also did several parties and festivals.

Did you feel a difference between deejaying in the U.S and in Korea?
A lot of different genres coexist, but as the birthplace of house music a lot of Clubs and Deejays in Chicago really respect house traditions. There are so many deejays in Chicago that, in order to survive, you have to invest a lot time into self promotion. I feel that’s the biggest difference with between there and Korea. Nowadays, you can promote through web and mobile platforms like Soundcloud or Mixcloud, but back then we only had Mix Cds or Demos. You had to be active and give them to record stores or promoters. If you didn’t push yourself, you would loose to the competition. Deejays had to work harder to improve themselves. I liked it that way.

Do you think there has a been an evolution in the Korean underground scene?
In the early 2000’s, there was the Afroking party. Then came 360 sounds in the mid 2000’s. Clubwise, Cargo, Tool, and VIA were really great. They all provided good underground sounds, but the only one that survived was 360 Sounds. A couple years ago, local crews like Deadend, Bass Attack, and BNS started popping up. In addition, the opening of the venue Cakeshop really strengthened the underground scene here in Seoul.

Tell us about your mix for Golmokgil.
I gave this mix a more chill sound than what I usually play for 360 Sounds or Deadend parties.

Do you also produce?
I don’t produce but I do a lot of re-edit or mash ups for my mixes.

What is your favourite track to listen to these days?
When I am at home I really enjoy listening to PARTYNEXTDOOR. I included them in this mix. I really like their track “West District”.
