Dämbi is a vinyl collector, dj, organizer, geomungo player(a korean percussion/string instrument) based in Seoul, South Korea. She stepped into the Korean music scene as a party promoter in 2011.

2011년 처음 디스코 파티를 시작하며 한국 음악 씬에 등장한 Dämbi는 현재 디제이, 파티 주최 및 거문고 연주를 통해 다양한 활동을 하고 있다.

이번 골목길을 위한 믹스를 간단히 소개해본다면? 
무엇보다도 현재 나의 감정 상태 및 위치를 가장 잘 분명하게 드러내는 곡들을 모아보았다. 올해 들어 익스페리멘탈 음악을 많이 듣고 접하면서 자연스레 사람들과 공유하고 싶은 마음이 생기게 되었다. 몇 곡은 비트감이 조금 있더라도, 어디서나 가볍게 들을 수 있는 리스닝 위주의 곡들을 선곡했다.

디제이를 할 때 가장 즐거운 점은?
내가 어떤 곡을 듣고 느꼈던 기쁨의 순간을 다른이들과도 함께 공유할 수 있다는 점이다.

디제이를 시작 하게 된 계기는?
초등학교 때부터 가요 외에 다양한 장르를 찾아서 듣게 되었다. 중학교때는 팝과 R&B, 힙합, 고등학교 때는 펑크락, 헤비메탈, 하드코어를 즐겨 들었고, 성인이 되어서는 클럽을 다니면서 자연스럽게 일렉트로닉 음악에 노출이 되었다. 항상 새롭고 신선한 음악을 찾으려고 노력하고 즐기다 보니, 그게 자연스럽게 내 자신이 된 것 같다.

해외에서 활동해 본 경험은? 한국과는 어떤 차이점이 있나?
작년 여름, 일본 여행을 갔었을 때 오사카의 한 바에서 음악을 틀었던 경험이 있다. 레코드 시장 규모도 훨씬 크고 음악을 접할 수 있는 매체들이 국내에 비해 훨씬 많기 때문에 음악 애호가들에게 있어서 좋은 곳이라고 생각했다.

현재 한국의 언더씬에는 어떤 변화가 있다고 생각하나?
내가 처음 클럽에 드나 들기 시작 했었던 이후로, 매년 다양한 클럽과 파티들이 생겨나고 없어졌다. 사람들이 자신이 좋아하는 음악에 대해서 더 찾고 애쓰고, 그런 관심을 표출하려는 결과였고, 앞으로 더욱 더 좋아질 것이라고 확신한다.

본인의 음악 색깔을 간단히 정의해본다면?
미니멀한 사운드, 더비(dubby)한 베이스라인 그리고 최근에는 적당한 보컬에 현악기 소리가 들어간 곡들도 많이 플레잉한다.

프로듀싱이나 작곡활동도 하고 있는지?
하고 있지만 아직 초기 단계이다. 현재 배우고 있는 악기인 거문고를 이용해 내 음악적인 색깔을 확실히 더 다져야한다고 생각한다. 독일에 있는 친구들과 함께 재미있는 협업을 할 계획중에 있다.

Tell us about your mix for Golmokgil.
I have put together tracks that showcase my current state and feelings in this mix. From the beginning of this year, I got really into experimental music and most mixes I’ve made so far naturally included those tracks. Some tracks from this mix are for the dance floor but still easy to listen to.

What is your favourite aspect of DJing?
I like to share the joyful experience of finding my favorite kinds of music with others.

How did you start DJing?
I stopped listening to Korean pop music at the age of 11. Ever since then, I’ve been on a journey exploring the infinite world of music. I was into Pop, R&B, and Hip-hop in middle school; then Punk Rock, Heavy Metal, Hard Core in high school. When I turned 19, I was exposed to Electronic Music. I was obsessed with new and unique sounds. Exposure to all of these very diverse genres have made me who I am today.

Have you ever performed abroad? If yes any difference with Korea?
Last summer, I had a chance to play out at a small bar in Osaka, Japan. The record market over there is far bigger than here in Korea. There are many ways that people can experience music there. It’s definitely a good place for music lovers.

Do you think there has a been an evolution in the Korean underground scene?
Sure thing. Many clubs and parties have faded in and out over the last few years. It was a result of people trying hard to follow their heart and share what they like by expressing their musical identities. It’s only going to get better.

What do you think is your musical color?
Minimal sounds, dubby baselines, and recently I’ve played tracks with vocals and string instruments.

Do you also produce?
I do but still at the beginner’s level. I’ve been trying to make tracks using my instrument, the Geomungo. Expect some collaborative works with some of my producer friends in the future.
