The same humility that Quandol displayed when asked about his English skills carry over into every aspect of his personality. He is cool as hell, and has nothing to be humble about when it comes to his extensive knowledge of nearly every artist or genre of music we discussed over drinks at a few different spots in and around the Gyeongridan area.

영어로 대화가 가능하냐는 제 질문에대한 첫 답변에서부터 그의 인간미에대해 느낄 수 있었습니다. 우리가 꽤 긴 시간동안 경리단길 곳곳을 누비며 얘기했던 아티스트들과 음악에대한 겸손하고도 폭 넓은 그의 생각들을 지금부터 같이 공유해 볼까요?

콴돌씨를 만나 인터뷰를 하기 전, 그와 한국어로 카카오톡을 주고받았습니다. 그래서 인터뷰를 어느나라말로 할지 묻자 다음과 같이 답변이 돌아왔습니다.

“조금요.”

혹시나 한국어로 인터뷰가 어렵지않을까하는 걱정에 그를 만나기 몇 일 전부터 필사적으로 질문들을 한국어표현으로 외우기 시작했습니다. 하지만 다행히 도조에서 맥주를 들이킨 후에는 아주 편하게 영어로 대화를 이어나갈 수 있었어요. 후후. 영어를 조금밖에 못 한다는 콴돌씨의 대답은 지나치게 겸손한 표현이었군요.

반가워요, 콴돌! 인터뷰에 응해줘서 고마워요. Quandol이라는 디제이명은 어떻게 정하신건가요?
Aston Union이라는 밴드활동을 하던 시기에 이 이름을 갖게되었어요. Asoto Union 활동했을 당시 ‘오인용’이라는 플래시 애니메이션 팀의 애니메이션을 즐겨봤었는데, ‘폭력교실’이라는 에피소드의 주인공인 깐돌이가 저랑 닮았다고 밴드멤버들이 놀리면서 깐돌이로 불리기 시작했어요. 그러다가 디제이로서 커리어를 시작하면서 라틴적인 요소를 가미해 Quandol이라는 이름이 탄생하게 되었습니다. 라틴스타일의 음악이 저에게 많은 영감을 주었기때문에 ‘언제(when)’를 뜻하는 Cuándo라는스페인어를 깐돌이랑 믹스해서 완성했어요.

오랜만에 재미있는 작명 에피소드를 들었네요. 그럼 디제잉과 프로듀싱을 시작하신지는 얼마나 되신거죠?
2013년 디제이 친구들과 이태원에서 살면서 디제잉 스케쥴이 많아졌습니다. 그래서 저는 제가 2013년부터 디제잉 커리어를 쌓기 시작했다고 이야기합니다. 프로듀싱은 밴드로 활동할 때부터 했었고 개인적인 프로듀싱은 2009년부터 시작했습니다.

프로듀싱도 열정적으로하고 계신 것 같은데, 정작 본인은 한번도 완성된 작품을 공개하신 적은 없다고 말씀하시니 의아하네요. 사운드클라우드에도 상당히 많은 자료들이있던데, 프로듀싱 작업도 앞으로 계속하시는거죠?  
비트를 찍기 시작한지는 5년정도됬어요. 제가 만든 곡들을 디제잉할 때 플레이할 수 있으면 좋을텐데, 노력하고 있지만 아직 저만의 스타일로 한 곡 한 곡 완성하는 일이 쉽지가 않네요. 프로듀싱 뿐 만 아니라 연주, 디제잉 등 여러가지 활동을 하다보니 현재 프로듀싱이 최우선 순위는 아니에요.

퍼켜셔니스트이신만큼 프로듀싱 작업을 할 때 컴퓨터로만 작업하시기 보다는 왠지 드럼이나 MPC같은 장비들도 같이 사용하실 것 같은데요. 실제로 작업하실 때 어떤 것들을 주로 사용하시나요? 
저는 맥유저이고 주로 Logic으로 작업합니다. 제가 연주자라 Pad로 드럼 프로그래밍을 할 거라 생각하실 수 있는데 마스터키보드를 이용합니다. 나중에는 소장하고 있는 MPC 3000으로도 작업하고 싶습니다.

멋지군요. 당신이 팔로우하고있는 아티스트들도 너무 궁금해요!
최근에는 UK 프로듀서인 Kahn의 음원들을 많이 접하고있어요. 그라임뮤직씬에서 Kahn과 Neek 듀오가 보여주는 음악들은 정말 놀라워요. 그라임 스타일이 영국에서는 트랩과 상당히 비슷하게 인식되는거같긴 하지만, 요즘 영국과 미국 등에서 훌륭한 작품들이 많이 나오고있어서 열심히 디깅하고 있어요.

그럼 랩퍼들 중에 베스트 5만 꼽자면 누가 있을까요? 랩퍼로써 이 질문을 안 할 수가 없네요!

5. J Dilla- He is my Yoda. He’s the greatest emcee and producer in my opinion.

콴돌씨의 믹셋을 몇 개 들어봤는데, 장르의 폭이 정말 넓으신 것 같아요. 특히나 사운드클라우드에 있던 ‘Meu Brazil Mix ‘BRAIN FREEZE 2014′ 믹셋이 인상깊네요. 브라질리언 스타일은 언제부터 다루기 시작하신건가요? 
2006년에 친구들과 모여 홍대에서 Escola Alegria라는 삼바 커뮤니티를 시작하면서 이쪽 문화 전반에 관심을 갖게 되었어요. 포르투갈어 Escola Alegria에서 Escola라는 단어가 직역하면 학교라는 의미인데, 전반적으로 공동체, 커뮤니티라는 의미로 더 자주 쓰이는 것 같아요.

음악 외적으로도 재미있는 활동들을 많이 하셨네요. 그럼 국내 힙합씬에대해서도 이야기를 나눠볼까해요. 개인적으로 One Sun의 Shining Ground같은 프로그램을 통해 쿨한 랩퍼들을 많이 만나봤고, MoodSchula같은 국내 앨범도 정말 좋아해서 국내 힙합아티스트들에대해서도 더 알아가고 싶어요. 이 글을 읽는 외국인독자분들을위해 추천해 줄 수있는 음악이 있을까요? 
Mood Schula 앨범에 참여했던 Qim Isle을 추천합니다. 개인적으로 무척 좋아하는 래퍼입니다. 한편의 누아르 영화를 보는듯한 내용의 가사와 원숙한 표현력의 차붐도 추천합니다. 마지막으로 앞으로의 활동이 기대되는 Alshain, Roci Eycko, Bad Joyscoutt도 꼭 추천하고 싶네요.

그렇다면 국내 언더그라운드씬 전반에대한 생각은 어떠신가요?
개개인마다 음악적 취향이 다르고, 그 바탕에 깔려있는 문화적 기반 역시 차이가 많기때문에 현재의 언더씬이 긍정적/부정적으로 흘러가고있다고 단정지을 수는 없다고 생각해요. 하지만 작년을 돌이켜보면 국내 랩퍼들과 디제이들사이에 많은 변화가 있었던 것 같아 흥미롭네요.

올해는 새로운 프로젝트나 파티 소식이 없으신가요?
올해 그라임뮤직 instrumental 싱글이나 미니앨범을발표할예정이에요.

기대하고 있겠습니다. 마지막으로, 이번 골목길에 보내주신 믹셋에대해 설명을 좀 부탁드릴게요.
음, 2014년 한 해 동안 제가 가장 좋아했던 곡들로 구성해보았어요. 이 믹스에 있는 곡들을 케익샵에서 주로 틀었던 곡들입니다. 이런 스타일의 음악은 케익샵 아니면 틀 수 없기 때문이죠. Grime, Jungle이 많은데 제가 요즘 가장 좋아하는 스타일이기 때문입니다.

All of the correspondence leading up to my meeting with Quandol a couple of weeks ago was done in Korean over Kakao Talk, as when asked how well he could speak English, he responded by saying: 

“A little.” 

I was a bit worried that my Korean wouldn’t be up to par for the interview, and frantically tried memorizing the Korean translations I had received of the questions prepared for him days before the meeting. However, after ordering a massive beer at Dojo, he began chatting in English and he was pretty damn good at it. 

How did you come up with the name Quandol?
I got the name nameQuandol when I was working with a band called Asoto Union. The band leader started called me Ggandol.You remember the cartoon Tom and Jerry? In Korean, Jerry’s name is translated to 깐돌. It means ‘smart and very fast.’ He always said that I was really similar to 깐돌이, and it just naturally became my nickname among my friends. I changed it a bit when I was making my DJ name because of the influence Latin music has had on my music career. I mixed the Spanish word for ‘when,’Cuándowith Ggandoland came up with Quandol.

How long have you been DJ’ing/Producing?
I’d say I didn’t really consider myself a full-time DJ until about a year ago. Prior to 2014, I was still playing a lot of percussion. This past year, however, was the first time that I devoted all of my time primarily to DJ’ing. I first became interested in it in around 2003, though. A lot of my friends, including Soulscape, were DJ’s at the time. I was a big fan of DJ Soulscape, and we ended up becoming friends because he was interested in my bands, Asoto Union and Windy City.

I found a lot of beats on your Soundcloud. I know you mentioned that you rarely end up getting around to finishing them, but how did you get into producing? Do you want to pursue producing more in the future?
I first started making my own beats about 5 years ago. I want to be able to play my own tracks when I DJ, but the problem is that I can’t concentrate on my own music. There is too much dope stuff out there for me to be able to think about making my own. I want to produce, play percussion, and compose. Production just hasn’t been the main focus yet.

When you do get around to producing, what type of software do you use? As a percussionist, do you find that you like utilizing MPC’s or drum machines more than doing it all on the computer?
I like using Apple, so I usually make everything on Logic. I don’t use an MPC, just a master keyboard for drums and samples. I have an MPC 3000, but I haven’t started using it live because it takes a lot of practice. I’d like to incorporate it into my set one day, but at the same time, there are just certain sequences that I think only a human can play. Real instruments and sequencers are a different world.

Which producers/rappers/Dj’s are you currently listening to?
I’m listening to a UK Grime producer named Kahn a lot at the moment. Kahn and Neek are probably my favorite producers at the moment. They’re a duo. I love what they’re doing with Grime Music. I think that Grime is really similar to Trap Music in the UK. Guys out there, and in the U.S, are making grime music that is almost like ambience. I really dig it.

As an MC, I am always interested in who producers choose as their favorite rappers. Who would you say are your top 5 favorite MC’s at the moment.

All of your mixes feature a huge variety of musical genres. I really dig the Meu Brazil Mix ‘BRAIN FREEZE 2014′joint on your SoundCloud. How did you become interested in Brazilian Music?
In 2006, I started a Samba school here with my friends in Hongdae called Escola Alegria. Escola means ‘school,’ but I think that in Brazil they use to word ‘escola’ to refer to more of a community. That’s when I got really interested in Brazilian music.

I really want to learn more about the Korean Hip-Hop scene. I love the MoodSchula album and I’ve had an opportunity to meet a lot of dope Korean MC’s performing at One Sun’s show series Shining Ground, but I want to know more. Who are your favorite Korean Hip Hop crews; new and old? Could you recommend some Korean Hip-Hop to foreigners out here?
If you like the MoodSchula album, check out Bad JoyScoutt. I am trying to make some beats for one of them now.They are friends of mine and one of my favorite crews in Korea. I also like 차붐 (Chaboom). He is like the Prodigy (Mobb Deep) of Korea. His songs are really dark. I really like his lyrics. My friends over at the Human Nature label are making great Hip-Hop as well. I really like their style.

What do you think of the evolution of the underground scene here in Korea over the past 10 years? Do you think it has changed for better or for worse?
I can’t say whether the evolution is good or bad. Everyone has a different cultural foundation that affects the kind of music they like. I think it’s been interesting. Last year, I think there was a big shift in terms of the DJ’s and MC’s here in Korea. It is all interesting to watch.

Are you releasing any new projects this year that you want to talk about?
I’d like to release in instrumental Grime album this year.

What can we expect to hear from your mix for Golmokgil?
This mix is comprised of my favorite songs from 2014. They are all songs that I can only play at Cakeshop, because other clubs don’t appreciate this kind of music. It’s a lot of Grime and Jungle music. I’m also really into Jungle music at the moment.
