He is inarguably one of the most influencing event organizers and djs in town and rumors have it that he is very well connected to the legendary DJ Penis, too. As one of the masterminds behind Pute Deluxe, Yann Cavaille started making rooftop parties and beach trips very popular in Korea. Pute Deluxe will soon officially end the winter with the 13-hours party Magic Cave.

얀, 잘 지냈어요? 이번 믹스테잎은 매우 특별하다고 할 수 있어요. 왜냐면 당신은 골목길의 초창기 멤버이기 때문이에요. 그리고 여전히 우리의 애정어린 친구이기도 하고요.
맞아요. 그렇게 말해줘서 고마워요. 골목길이 이렇게 빨리 성장해서 벌써 한국씬의 수많은 사람들을 소개했다니 놀랍네요.
고마워요. 사실 점점 더 많은 디제이들이 데뷔를 하고있고, 여전히 이 인터뷰 시리즈를 이어나가려고 하고있어요. 특히나 당신이 좋아하는 사람이 있나요?
글쎄요…로컬의 레전드들을 일일히 말할 필요는 없을거 같아요. 대신 어린 신인들을 주목하고 싶어요. 이제는 디제잉 보다 프로듀싱하는데 돈이 좀 덜들어요. 그런측면에서 어린 친구들이 프로듀싱을 많이 접하는 것 같고, 그들이 매우 좋은 재능을 갖고있는 것 같아요. 한국에선 정말 놀라운 일이죠. 그 중 Chek Parren, Monday Studio, Night Tempo, Slom을 언급하고 싶어요.
그들의 어떤점이 놀라운 걸까요? 좋은 디제이와 프로듀서가 되기위해 중요한 건 뭐라고 생각해요?
그들은 특히 프로덕션을 잘해요. 그리고 다양한 장르의 음악들을 좋아하죠. 이건 좋은 디제이가 되기 위해서도 꼭 필요한 것들이에요. 또 단순히 하나의 사운드나 스타일(장르)에만 관심을 두지 않고 다양한 음악의 매력을 찾는 것도 중요해요.
조금 식상한 말일지 모르겠지만, 나로인해 다른 누군가 최고의 토요일 밤을 보낼 수 있다는 건 매우 기분좋은 일이에요. 일주일 내내 일 하고 오직 토요일 하루만을 기다려온 사람들이잖아요. 그 사람들을 즐겁게 해주는건 모든 디제이들의 책임이기도 해요. 사람들이 음악과 분위기를 완전히 즐기고 있을 때 정말 성취감이 느껴지죠. 물론 만원짜리 한장 꺼내면서 “강남 스타일” 틀어달라고 하는 사람을 즐겁게 하자는 건 아니에요.
“강남 스타일”노래와 별개로, 디제이 관점에서 보기에 한국 씬은 어떤 특성을 갖을까요?
일단 커머셜 씬은 비슷해요. 빠르게 흥분하려고 만 하고, 음악은 별로 중요시 여기지 않죠. 테이블 장사를 위주로하는 클럽은 사실 세계 어디나 비슷해요. 언더그라운드 씬만 보자면, 한국씬은 상당히 젊은 곳이에요. 점점 성장하고 있어요. 그리고 결국 매우 의미있는 씬을 형성할거에요.
좀 전에 당신이 플레이 할 때 사람들을 즐겁게 하는게 매우 중요하다고 했어요. 한국의 클러버들은 어떻던가요?
일단 약을 하지 않아요. 음악을 즐기는 사람들 대부분은 분명 약을 하는거보다는 음악자체를 즐기는 거 같아요. 물론 약을 하지 않기때문에 특정 음악들은 다른 나라에서 만큼 인기를 끌지 못하기도 해요. 그리고 한국사람들은 춤추는 것에 거부감이 없어보여요. 많이 추고, 정말 잘 추죠. 어린 나이에 학교에서 배웠거나, 어쩌면 그들은 리듬감을 타고난 것 같기도해요.
좋아요. 한국과 그 씬에 대해 충분히 이야길 나눈 것 같아요. 이제 당신에 대해 이야기 해볼까요? 어떻게 디제잉을 시작하게 된거죠?
중학교와 고등학교 즈음에 나는 항상 워크맨이나 미니 디스크들을 통해 음악을 듣곤했죠. 왜 주변에 그런 친구 하나 꼭 있잖아요. 음악을 많이 듣고 다른 친구들에게 추천하곤 하는… 제가 그랬어요. 밤새 냅스터나 카자를 통해 찾은 음악들을 친구들에게 추천해보곤 했죠. 그리고 컴퓨터에서 미리 만들어 놓은 믹스들로 하우스 파티를 열기도 했죠. 그런 경험들이 다음과 같은 것을 기대하게했죠. “음악은 얀이 가져올거야”. 자연스럽게 장비들 몇개를 사기 시작했어요. 다만, 돈이 많이 없었고, 턴테이블과 믹서를 한대 씩 살 정도였죠. 일년동안 스크래칭 연습만 했답니다.
혹시 프로듀싱을 하기도 하나요?
그럼요. 꽤 만들었어요. 내가 만든 것들을 Urban Kawaii 또는 귀여운 게토 음악정도라고 하고 싶어요. ?
그럼 이번 골목길 믹스엔 어떤 곡들을 담았나요?
최근 꽤 좋아하는 것들을 모두 담았다고 보면 되요. 평소 라이브하던 것과는 다르게 해보려고했어요. 믹스의 시작부터 끝까지 하나의 테마를 유지하려고 노력해요. 이걸 위해 특정 영화나 오디오북 또는 다른 세계의 어떤 것들로부터 샘플들을 가져오기도 하죠. 이번에도 역시 샘플링을 활용했어요. 그리고 이펙터나 드럼들을 첨가했죠. 종합해보자면 미래지향적인(그게 뭐던간에) 프렌치 힙합과 grime, garage 음악들을 담았다고 할 수 있어요.
얀, 당신은 상업적이고 대중적인 클럽과 언더그라운드 클럽 모두에서 환영받는 디제이 중 한명이에요. 퓨트디럭스를 통해 다양한 것들을 보여줬고, 또 유명해지고 있죠. 루프탑 파티나 양양 비치 트립 등을 예로 들 수 있겠네요. 혹시 조만간 다른 새로운 것도 준비중에 있나요?
두 단어로 요약할 수 있어요. “MAGIC CAVE”… 조만간 이 엄청난 것을 경험할 수 있을 거에요!

Yes, indeed. Thanks for loving me. I’m impressed how Golmokgil has grown and showcased a huge portion of the Korean scene already.
Well, thanks a lot, but I actually think that more and more DJs are popping up and I hope we can continue this little series a bit more. Do you have any favorites here in Seoul?
DJ wize, hmmmm… I guess the local legends don’t need to be mentioned, but the young kids are becoming more and more interesting. It’s becoming cheaper to practice production than to practice djing, so I’m seeing a young wave of really talented producers coming through and that’s amazing news for Korea. Favourites right now Chek parren // Monday Studio // Night tempo // Slom
What makes them special for you? What do you think is important to be a good DJ and producer?
They are special because of their huge production skills and also they love a wide variety of music and that’s the main thing to be a good dj, too: not get cornered into one sound or style as there are beauties everywhere.
It may sound cliche but making people have the best saturday ever is the best feeling. We as DJs have the responsibility to entertain people who are working all week and whose only entertainment might be this Saturday night. So when you feel like people are 100% happy with the night and music, it’s an amazing feeling of accomplishment. Of course I’m not talking about entertaining the dude who give a 10 dollar bill to the dj to play “Gangnam Style”.
Except for “Gangnam style”: what do you think is different in Korea from a dj perspective?
I guess the commercial scene is pretty similar. People trying to have quick fun and music is not the most important thing. Bottle service clubs are all the same in every country. In terms of underground, Korea is obviously a newer scene, but I can see it developing more and more and will become a serious spot in the future.
You mentioned earlier that it is very important for you to please the crowd when you are spinning. What do you think is special about the Korean audience?
There’s no drugs, so I guess people who enjoy the music, will actually be definitely enjoying the sound rather than the trip. But also the absence of substances makes certain types of music not as popular as they would be in other countries. They also seem quite free about dancing. Koreans dance a lot and actually really well. Maybe it’s music being in the curriculum at a very young age, Koreans have a natural sense of rhythm.
Now, we talked about Korea and the local scene a lot. How about yourself? How did you start DJing?
In middle school and high school, I was always that dude with the walkman or Mini disc in the playground making people listen to brand new tracks that I spent all night or all week downloading on Napster or Kazaa. I also used to turn up to house parties with mixes I made on my computer beforehand and it became an expectation – “Yann would arrive with the music”. So I naturally decided to invest in some gear, but I was kinda broke so I could only afford one turntable and a mixer and for one year I only practiced scratching.
Do you also produce?
Yep, I made a decent amount of tracks. I’d say my style is Urban Kawaii, cute ghetto shit ?
And what did you put into your mix for Golmokgil?
I just gathered all the tracks I’m feeling at the moment. I treat mixtapes a lot different from my live mixes as I like to always give an overall theme from the intro to the end either using samples from the same movie or same audio book or same universe. I add samples to the final mix and also treat it as a big production adding SFX rises and drums in certain parts.This mix I mixed up some French hiphop with future shit (whatever that is) and some grime and garage.
You are one of the few people here who are well respected in both worlds – the commercial clubs and the underground. With Pute Deluxe you also started many things that are getting more and more popular in Seoul, like the rooftop parties or the YangYang beach trips you have organized. Do you have anything else special coming up in the next few months?
