지난 주말, 360 sounds와 DIPCOIN을 함께하며 가장 바쁜 한 해를 보내고 있는 Maalib을 만나고 왔습니다.

We had an interview last Sunday with Maalib, who is currently one of the busiest artist in Seoul showing off his talents in the 360 sounds and DIPCOIN crew. Check out Maalib’s cool oldschool vibes in his brand new mixtape!

안녕하세요. 먼저 골목길 독자들을 위해 인사 부탁드려요.
안녕하세요. 저는 말립(Maalib)이고 DIPCOIN, 360Sounds에서 음악을 만들고, 틀고 있습니다. 또, 방배동에 있는 레코드샵, rm360의 스태프이기도 합니다.

음악을 시작하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
음악을 본격적으로 해야겠다고 생각한 건 군대를 다녀 와서 부터였어요. 2013년 말. 그전부터 음악을 만들고 하긴 했지만, 취미 정도였어요. rm360에서 일하면서 시작했다고 할 수 있어요.

왜 하필 군대에 있던 시기에 많은 변화가 있었는지요?
군대에 안 간 사람에게는 설명해도 모를 거에요. (웃음) 군대에 있으면 많은 생각을 하게 되요.

비트메이커로써 음악을 시작하신 걸로 아는데요. Djing은 어떻게 시작하게 되셨어요?
원래 DJ는 할 생각이 없었어요. 사실 rm360 일을 시작하고 나서도 안 틀었는데, 같이 일하는 재용이형(DJ Jeyon)과 샵에서 음악 틀고 놀다가 시작하게 되었죠. 재용이형이 전역한 시기부터 디제잉을 시작한 거 같아요.

음악에는 언제부터 관심을 가졌나요?
관심은 어렸을 때부터 있었어요. 돈 모아서 음악 잡지 모으고, 음악 듣고 그랬죠. 친누나 영향이 컸어요. 친누나가 음악을 좋아했었거든요.

DIPCOIN, 360Sounds 두 크루를 병행하면서 활동하고 있잖아요. 아무래도 각 크루안에서의 역할에 있어서 차이가 있을 것 같아요.
DIPCOIN 같은 경우는 저의 의견이 많이 들어가는 편이죠. 전반적인 일을 허키랑 같이 하고 다른 멤버들은 컨텐츠 제작에 신경을 쓰는 편입니다. 360Sounds는 아무래도 다른 멤버 형들에 비해 제가 합류한 기간이 비교적 짧은 편이고, 디렉팅을 하는 사람이 있으니까 의견에 따르는 편이에요.

360Sounds는 어떻게 합류하게 되었나요?
원래는 그냥 360Sounds의 팬이었어요. 그러다가 군대에 있을 때, 이 사람들이랑 같이하면 내가 뭐라도 할 수 있지 않을까라는 생각을 했고, 결심을 했어요. 그래서 전역날 군복을 입고 샵에 가서 막무가내로 일을 시켜달라고 하려고 했죠. 그래서 샵에 갔는데, 하필 그날이 제이락(J Rocc) 내한때문에 샵이 운영을 하지 않는 날이었어요. 문이 닫혀 있었죠. 그래서 그냥 ‘아 이 길은 내가 갈 길이 아니구나’하고 돌아갔죠. 하지만 운영을 하는 날에 샵에 다시 찾아가서, 일을 시켜달라고 했죠. 당시 샵 매니저였던 킬라송 형이 처음에는 일손이 필요 없다고 거절을 했었고, 그래서 저도 공장에 들어가서 일을 했어요. 그리고 그 이후에 계속 샵을 찾아가서, 일을 시켜달라고 했었고, 결국에 킬라송 형이 ‘너 택배 포장이라도 할래?’하면서 샵에서 일하기 시작했죠.

원래 360Sounds와 친분이 있었나요?
그냥 공연보러 가서 팬으로써 인사하는 정도였어요.

딥코인은 어떻게 만들어지게 되었나요?
우선 배드조이스카웃(Badjoyscoutt)은 제가 앨범 프로듀서로 참여해서 알고 있었어요. 비슷한 시기에 군산에서 음악을 하는 친구들이 있다는 걸 알게 되었는데, 그 친구들이랑은 서울에 놀러왔을 때 만났죠.. 구스범스(GooseBumps), PNSB 같은 친구들이요. 부산에서는 일랍, 짱유에 대해서 알고 있었고요. 그리고 이후에 친해졌고요. 사실 처음에는 다들 병신이라고 생각했어요.

누구를요?
다. 다 병신이라고 생각했었죠. (웃음)

하하 요즘 즐겨 듣는 음악이 있나요?
FISHMANS

평소에 음악은 어떤 경로로 많이 듣나요?
Youtube로 많이 들어요.

아무래도 다양한 방식(바이닐, USB, SP404 컨트롤러)로 음악을 트는만큼, 어떤 기기를 활용해서 플레이하느냐에 따라서 스타일도 차이를 둘 것 같아요.
일단은 웬만하면 바이닐로 틀려고 해요. 근데 아무래도 바이닐로 틀 수 없는 환경도 많으니까, 그때는 USB로 틀죠. 아무래도 바이닐로 음악을 틀면 조금 더 옛날 음악을 많이 틀게 되고. USB로 틀 때는 바이닐로 플레이할 때 틀 수 없었던 음악을 많이 틀긴 해요. SP404로 플레이하는 경우에는 제가 만드는 음악, 혹은 그 음악과 비슷한 스타일의 트랙을 플레이하는 편이에요.

요즘은 어떤 작업을 하시나요?
개인 작업하고 있고요. 브랜드 음악 외주 작업도 하고 있어요

타 아티스트 앨범도 작업하고 계신가요?
얼마 전 카 더 가든(Car The Garden)을 도왔고, 그 외 다른 아티스트와의 작업을 특별히 좋아하지 않아요.

말립씨는 DJ, 프로듀싱 뿐만 아니라, 딥코인 크루의 이벤트를 기획하는 일 또한 맡아서 하고 계시는 걸로 알고 있어요. 이벤트를 만들 때, 가장 중요하게 생각하는 부분이 뭔가요?
아무래도 우리만의 것이 있는 이벤트를 만들려고 하죠.

그렇다면 딥코인만의 것에는 어떤게 있을까요?
우리의 현재를 속이지 않는 것

선호하는 베뉴는 어디에요?
더 헨즈 클럽(The Henz Club). 일단 거기 일하는 형들이 엄청 착하고 다 좋아요. (웃음) 저한테 편한 곳이기도 하고, 쾌적해요. 그리고 사실 많은 클럽에서 사운드 적인 부분의 중요성에 대해서 알고 있지만, 이런 부분을 실행에 옮기는 경우는 많지 않잖아요. 그런 면에서 더 헨즈 클럽은 사운드에 관해서 굉장히 투자도 많이 하고, 신경도 많이 써요. 고마운 부분이죠.

흔히들 서울 힙합 씬에 대해서 얘기할 때, 홍대 씬과 이태원 씬으로 나눠서 이야기하는 경우가 많잖아요. 필드에서 활동하는 플레이어로서 실제로 이런 부분에 대해서 차이점을 느끼나요?
음악 트는 입장에서는 크게 차이를 느끼지 못해요. 그런데 래퍼들끼리는 그런 게 있는 거 같더라고요. 실제로 홍대 공연장에서 공연을 하고 싶어서 간 적이 있는데, ‘너네는 이태원에서 하는 애들이잖아.’라는 이야기를 들은 적이 있어요. 그런 면에서 공연을 하는 사람들은 힘든 것 같더라고요. 그래서 딥코인 페스트(DIPCOIN PEST)를 만들었어요. 여러 장르, 다양한 씬에서 활동하는 사람을 엮어서 할 수 있는 공연이에요.

앞으로의 계획에 대해서 말씀해주세요!
솔로 앨범과 허키(Hukky Shibasekki)와 함께하는 프로젝트 앨범을 계획 중이고, 5월 6일에는 피스틸에서 플레이가 있어요. 5월 15일 예정된 딥코인 페스트(DIPCOIN PEST)라는 공연을 기획중이고요.

Hello, first, could you greet our Golmokgil readers?
Hi, I’m Maalib. I make and play music for DIPCOIN and 360Sounds. Also, I currently work near the Bangbae area in a record shop by the name of rm360.

How did you get started on making music?
I decided to make music after returning from the army. In the latter part of 2013, to be exact. I made music beforehand, as a hobby, but as I began to work in the shop, I felt the need to focus it all on producing.

Why was it particularly the army that influenced your musical career.
I don’t think people will understand unless they have actually experienced it (laughs). I thought about a lot of things while in the army.

I’ve heard you started out as a beatmaker, how did you become a DJ?
At first, I had no plans to DJ. Frankly, I didn’t think about it even after starting to work at rm360. Co-staff/friend DJ Jeyon influenced me to get in the craft, after we started to play around with some records when he was discharged from the army.

When did you get into music?
I was interested in it from a young age. I saved up to buy music magazines, and listened to music as well. My sister was a huge impact; she was really into music at the time.

You’re currently working with both DIPCOIN and 360Sounds, so there’s got to be some differences between the two, What’s your role as a crew member in each of them?
DIPCOIN takes in more of my opinion, for the bulk of work gets down by Huki and I. I’ve only recently joined 360Sounds, and we have a designated director already, so there are definite differences of how much my opinion plays in the crew.

How did you join 360Sounds?
At first, I was just a fan of 360Sounds. However, when in the army, I thought if I worked with these guys in anyway, something big might happen, so I was determined to go for it. At the day when I got discharged, I went straight to the shop and was going to ask them recklessly, if I could work for them. Ironically, the shop was closed that day because of J Rocc’s concert in Seoul. So I thought to myself, ‘maybe this isn’t right for me’, but that slowly faded, and I went back when they were open, and asked them if they needed a hand. The shop manager at the time declined, so I had to go back to the factory for work. However I knocked on the door multiple times for him to say, ‘do you want to package records or something at least?’ and that is how I got started working with them.

Were you acquainted with 360Sounds at all?
We used greet them when they were at concerts and whatnot, but we weren’t anything beyond that level.

How was DIPCOIN crew created?
I used to know Badjoyscoutt since I joined working on his album as a producer. Around that time I met these guys making music at Gun-san , GooseBumps and PNSB, and started to hang out with them when they came to Seoul. I also became friends with Illap aka Jjangyou(짱유) from Busan and we all got closer ending up making this crew. Honestly at the first time I thought they were all just assholes.

Like who?
Everyone. They all looked like assholes haha.

Haha. What kind of music are you into thesedays?
I love the Fishmans.

How do you normally dig your music?
Youtube.

You play your sets using all types of equipments, like vinyls, USB, and SP404 controllers. Is there a difference in the style of music when you use each different type of machines?
Well I always prefer vinyls, but not all venues have turntables so I carry my usb as well. it’s fun to show some of my oldschool collections when I spin with vinyls. I enjoy playing with SP404 because I can play my own tracks that I made and mix them with other tracks that I like.

What kind of music are you producing thesedays?
I’m focusing on my singles. I also do some projects asked by other companies.

Are you currently doing any collaboration projects with other artists?
I gave some advice to Car The Garden recently, but I don’t really feel to work with other artists right now.

You’re not only working as a dj&producer, but also organising parties in Seoul. What’s the most important thing you consider when you plan events?
I guess we always try to make events that can show our own identity.

Then what would that be, as a member of DIPCOIN?
Being honest to who you are at the moment.

Where is your favorite place to perform?
The Henz Club! I love all the staffs there. I feel comfortable when I play, and it’s also really clean. There aren’t many clubs that have a proper sound system even though they are aware of how much important that is in a club. In that aspect, the Henz club definitely put a lot of effort on the sound so I really appreciate it.

People often separate the hiphop scene in Seoul into two regions, Hongdae & Itaewon. As an artist who works in both fields, are there any differences between those two?
I don’t really feel a big gap between them, but it seems that some rappers do. Actually I’ve once had a chance to perform at hongdae, and after my show I heard some people saying ‘You belong to Itaewon.’ It’s not easy to perform as a rapper in Seoul. That’s the reason why we created the DIPCOIN PEST. We’re going to gather all the people working in different genres in the scene and create something new.

Tell us about your coming up schedules please!
I’m now working on a project album with Hukky Shibasekki, and I have a gig booked at Pistil on May 6^th. Also planning the DIPCOIN PEST event on May 15^th!
