스코틀랜드 출신의 프로듀서이자 DJ, Juju recordings 오너인 Mastiv를 만나봤습니다.

안녕하세요 Mastiv! 어디에서 오신 분 인가요?
안녕하세요! 저는 스코틀랜드에서 왔어요.

스코틀랜드에서는 어떤 음악들이 주류 음악인가요?
스코틀랜드에서는 락과 인디음악들 그리고 전자음악들이 유명해요. 굉장히 많은 사람들이 밴드음악을 좋아하고 또한 많은 좋은 밴들들이 있어요. 그리고 테크노 씬을 봤을때도 Gary Beck, SLAM 등 많은 아티스트들이 있어요. 그리고 테크노를 좋아하는 사람도 많죠.

활동하시는 것을 봤을때 테크노, 테크하우스의 장르를 하고 계신데, 소속되어 있는 레이블이 있으신가요?
저는 몇개의 음반사들과 일을 하고 있어요, 최근에는 Popof 의 음반사인 FORM MUSIC 에서 발매를 했었고, 가장 최근에 발매했던 EP 는 Uto Karem 의 Agile Recording에서 나왔엇고요. 그리고 Nihil young의 Frequenza라는 이태리의 음반사에서도 발매를 했었어요. 또한 JuJu Record 를 운영중이기도 해요.

JuJu는 어떤 의미를 가지고 있나요?
사실 JuJu 는 동아프리카 Swahili 언어로 Black magic 을 의미해요. 저희 부모님은 탄자니아 사셔서 자주 방문하고 그곳에 갈때마다 많은 영감을 얻고 음반사이름을 JuJu 라고 만들게 됬어요. 우리는 새로운 탤런트들을 많이 찾고있어요. 개인적인 목적을 위해서도 운영중이고요.

앨범을 처음 발매한게 언제인지 기억해요?
사실 제 첫번째 앨범은 굉장히 오래전이에요. 제가 19살에, 심지어 디제이를 시작하기 전에 발매했었어요. 그때는 “The Oxygen Junkies” 라는 이름으로 두명의 가까운 친구들과 활동했어요. 첫번째 저희 앨범은 호주의 작은 음반사에서 발매됬었어요, 그리고 제가 가장좋아하는 저의 릴리즈는 Kevin Saunderson 의 KMS Records 에서 발매되었던 우리의 리믹스였어요.

음악을 만드는건 어떻게 접하게 되고 배우셨나요?
운이 좋게도 저희 “The Oxygen Junkies” 의 멤버였던 친구 한명이 정말 뛰어난 재능을 갖고있었어요. 오디오 엔지니어링을 전공한 친구여서 기술적으로 굉장히 많이 알고있었어요. 그래서 항상 그 친구에서 제가 모르는걸 물어보곤 했어요. 물론 혼자 고민한 부분도 많이있었지만요. 하하

프로듀싱을 디제이보다 먼저 시작하셨는데, 처음 디제이를 하셨을때 어떤 기분이었을지 궁금하네요?
Edinburgh에 위치한 Liquid Rooms 라는 곳이었어요. 엄청나게 떨렸었죠. 디제이를 시작하게 됬을때가  저에게 아주 큰 전환점이었어요. 지금까지 굉장히 즐기고있어요.

디제이를 하실때 주로 어떻게 사람들을 이끄나요?
저는 보통 2시간 이상으로 길게 트는 것을 좋아해요. 사람들을 보고 그들이 어떤것에 움직이는지 지켜보고 그들이 어떤 것에 움직이는지 보며 그 시간동안 스스로의 빌드업으로 대중을 끌어나가는 것은 중요하다고 생각해요. 한국에서의 활동들은 제가 대중을 읽는 것에 대하여 굉장히 많은 발전을 줬어요. 영국은 사실 제가 어떤 음악을 틀더라도 사람들은 미쳐 놀꺼에요. 그러나 한국은 매번 다른 것 같아요. 사람들이 얼마나 즐기고 있는지 반응을 살펴보는게 대단히 중요한거 같아요.

플레이하는 새로운 음악들은 보통 어떻게 구하시나요?
저는 제가 좋아하는 많은 음반사들을 비트포트와 트랙잇다운에서 팔로우 중이에요. 또한 FORM 뮤직이라던가 가까운 또 다른 많은 음반사들에서 PROMO 를 받기도하고, 친구들과 이메일로도 많이 주고 받아요. 그리고 역시 제 트랙도 많이 트는 편이에요.

디제이나 프로듀싱을 하실때 외에는 어떤 음악들을 즐기시나요?
제가 그 것들을 하고 있지않을때는 정말 모든 장르의 음악을 다 듣는 것 같아요. 전자음악을 오래 듣게되면 귀에도 꼭 휴식을 줘야해요. 그리고 저는 Oasis, The Stroeks 등 락밴드들을 정말 좋아하고 힙합과 랩도 종종 듣는 것 같아요.

요즘 즐겨 듣는 곡이 있다면 추천해주실수 있을까요?
요즘 저의 셋에서 가장 많이 플레이하고 있는 Matt Sassari 의 Excelsior (Original Mix) 와 Dubfire & Oliver Huntemann 의 Terra (Joseph Capriati Remix) 가 있어요. 사실 골목길 믹스에도 포함 시켰습니다 여러분을 위하여!

어떤 계기로 하우스와 테크노 사운드를 좋아하게 되셨나요?
저는 서브베이스와 퍼쿠션의 굉장한 팬이에요, 테크노는 이 것들에 많은 중심을 두기도해요, 저는 트랙에서 드럼이 가장 중요한 드라이빙포스라고 생각해요. 좋은 드럼은 좋은 그루브를 만들고 이것은 댄스플로어에 굉장히 좋은 일이죠.

디제이라면 전부 프로듀싱을 해야한다고 생각하시나요?
사실 지금 이 시대에는 디제이만 하여서는 국제적인 경력을 가져가기 힘든 것 같아요. 물론 지금까지 예외는 있었지만 제 생각에 해외공연을 다니거나 더 멀리 나의 경력을 생각한다면 음악을 만들어야 할 필요가 있어요. 이것은 자연스러운 진행현상이라고 생각해요.

“언더그라운드” 씬 이라는 것을 어떻게 생각하시나요?
모든 도시들에는 그들만의 각 각의 작은 그룹들이 있어요. 물론 사람들과 네트워크 하는것은 중요해요. 그래도 저는 사실 씬이라는 것에 너무 매이지 않으려고해요. 전 그저 제 음악을 만들고 다른 사람들에게도 제가 받고싶은 것처럼 대할 뿐이에요.

클럽을 제외하고 서울이나 청주에서는 보통 어디에서 시간을 보내시나요?
나는 이태원에 친구들이 조금 살고 있어요, 그래서 그 친구들과 멕시코 음식을 먹으면서 보내곤해요. 청주에는 뉴질랜드에서 온 친구가 최근에 오픈한 조그만 바 Nest 라는 곳에서 많은 시간을 보내고 있어요, 앞으로도 그럴 것 같고요.

이번 믹스가 어떤 것일지 얘기해보신다면?
많은 에너지와 드라이빙한 베이스라인들 그리고 제 개인 곡들로 이루어져 있어요. 다들 즐겨주셨으면 좋겠어요!

Hi Mastiv, Where are you from? 
Hey, I’m from Scotland.

What music is Scotland most famous for?
I would say Scotland is famous for it’s rock and indie music and for electronic music. Lots of people like Bands and there are a lot of Gooood bands. Also, there are a lot of good techno artists like Gary Beck, SLAM etc.. it is incredible crowd for Techno.

Basically you are techno and tech house music artist, which labels are you part of?
I have number of labels im working with, recently i have realesed on Form music which is Popof’s label. My recent EP is on Uto Karem’s Agile Recording and also there is label call ” Frequenza ” from Italy run by Nihil young. I also have my own label “Juju recordings”

What does Juju mean?
Juju actually means “Black magic ” in the east african language, Swahili. My parents lives in Tanzania. So i often visit and it inspired me to name the label Juju. Juju Recording is a label dedicated for new talent. i try to find new talented artists for Juju. Also for my own favorite tracks too.

When was your first release?
Actually my first release was a very long time ago, when i was 19 before even i started DJ. that time i used name as “ The Oxygen Junkies” which was a project with two good friends. The very first release we had was on a very small Australian label but one of my favorite releases was a remix we did for KMS records which is run by “ Kevin Saunderson “.

How did you learn about producing music? 
luckliy  one of my friends who was a member of “The Oxygen Junkies” was really talented at producing music. he majored in  “Audio engineering” so he was technically so talented. I always could ask him about anything i didn’t know. The rest was self taught.

You said, you started produce earlier than DJ. i am wonder how you felt when your first DJ?
I remember being extremely nervous as it was actually in one of the biggest clubs in Edinburgh called the Liquid Rooms. It was a huge learning curve from when I first started DJing until now and i’v really enjoyed it.

how do you usually try to carry crowd at clubs when you are djing?
I prefer longer sets (2 hours minimum) as it gives me the opportunity to really build the set up over the course of a few hours. I think it’s really important to observe the crowd and see what they are moving to. Being in Korea has helped me develop my skills of reading a crowd. In the UK, you can pretty much play what you want and people will go crazy, but the crowds in Korea can be really different each time you play, so it is extremely important to see what people are enjoying and responding to on the night.

How do you find new tracks?
I follow a lot of my favorite labels on various websites like Beatport and Trackitdown. I also get sent some nice promos from FORM and other labels i’m signed to which is nice. Friends send me songs and I also play a lot of my own tracks.

What kind of music you usually spend time with?
When I’m not producing or DJ’ing I like to listen to all kinds of music. It’s good to take a break and give your ears a rest from listening to electronic music every now and then!  I love a lot of rock bands like Oasis and The Strokes and I like a lot of older Hip Hop and Rap.

Can you recommend some of your favorite tunes?
My favorite tracks at the moment which I play in a lot of my sets are Matt Sassari – Excelsior (Original Mix) and Dubfire & Oliver Huntemann – Terra (Joseph Capriati Remix). I actually included them in my mix for you guys!

What brought you close to more house and techno sound?
I am a big fan of sub bass and percussion and techno puts a lot of focus on this. For me, the drums are the main driving force in a track. Great drums create a great groove which is excellent on the dance floor.

Should DJ want to be producers?
I think in today’s world, it is very rare for someone to carve an international career only as a dj. Of course there are a few exceptions but i really believe if you want to play gigs abroad or take your career further you need to be making music also. It’s a natural progression in my opinion.

What are your thoughts of “ Underground ” Scene ?
try to not get too caught up in the “scene”. Every city in every country has it’s own little groups. Of course it’s very important to network. I just keep my head down, focus on making music and treat others like how i would like to be treated.

Except for clubs, where do you usually hang out in Seoul or Cheongju?
In Seoul, I usually tend to hang out in Itaewon. I have a few friends who live there and Itaewon has a lot of nice international food, especially Mexican food. In Cheongju, my friend from New Zealand just opened a cool little bar called Nest so I have been and will be spending most of my free time there in the near future.

What can we expect from your Golmokgil mixtape?
You can expect a fun mix filled with lots of energy, driving basslines and a couple of my own productions in for good measure. Hope you guys enjoy it!
