만나서 반갑습니다. 지금 우리가 앉아있는 ATM은 어떤 곳이에요?
Mystik 플레이 전 들리게 되는 곳이에요. 댄스플로어가 있는 가게는 아니지만, 제가 틀고 싶은 것들을 틀고 간단하게나마 반응을 체크해볼 수 있는 곳이죠.
당신이 데크 뒤에서 바이닐을 만지는 것을 보면, 그것들을 얼마나 소중하게 생각하는지 알 수 있어요.
바이닐은 컴퓨터 파일이 아니잖아요. 물리적인 컨디션이 상당히 중요한 매체에요. 소중히 다룰 수 밖에 없고요. 기본적으로 그런 것들을 중요시합니다.
혹시 바이닐을 고집하는 이유가 있을까요?
디지털 기계에대한 이질감이 컸어요. 주로 사들이는 것들도 빈티지 아날로그 악기들이고요. 그것들은 뭔가 살아있는 듯한 느낌이 들어요. 점점 소리가 변해가기도 하고, 같은 모델도 기기마다 소리가 조금씩 다르기도 하니까요. 제가 가지고 있는 바이닐 음악들을 디지털 파일로 듣게되는 경우가 종종 있는데, 저는 분명히 차이가 느껴져요.
Mystik에서는 어떤 점을 주로 신경쓰나요?
그곳은 댄스플로어가 있는 곳이죠. 어떤 방식이 되었든 사람들을 움직이게 만들어야해요. 특히나 직접 구매하고 엄선해온 바이닐을 가지고, 사람들을 콘트롤 할 수 있다는게 참 매력적이에요. 제 취향이 충분히 반영된 바이브를 만들어 갈 수 있잖아요. 그리고 Mystik이 사랑스러운건 훌륭한 사운드 시스템을 갖추고 있다는 거에요. 서울의 다른 클럽들보다 훨씬 더요. 그리고 한가지 확실한 건 Mystik은 제 플레이를 정말 존중해주고 있어요.
이번 믹스테잎을 들어보면 상당히 스무스한 전개가 느껴져요.
천천히 호흡해 올라가는 걸 좋아해요. 맘 같아선 5시간짜리 셋을 하고싶었어요. 사실 Mystik에서도 쉽지 않은 길이입니다. [웃음]
뜨거운감자의 보컬 그리고 김C라는 이름으로 꽤 오래 활동한 밴드뮤지션이세요. 처음에 디제이라는 걸 어떻게 생각하셨나요?
사실 한동안 저는 스스로를 디제이라고 소개하지 않았어요. 단순히 음악을 배열하고 소개하는 일로 받아들였어요. 라디오 디제이도 마찬가지잖아요. 물론 지금은 좀더 여유가 생겨 발전한 부분이 있죠. 마치 한 곡인 것처럼 믹싱한다거나, 필터를 걸어보는 것들이요.
Oviduct란 이름을 갖게 된 이유가 궁금해요.
수란관*이라는 의미죠. 평소 여성과 그 신체에대한 관심과 존중심을 갖고 있었어요. 특히 Oviduct란 게 생명의 시작과 관련된 기관이라는 것에 더 의미를 두고 있고요.

그러면 ‘Oviduct=김C’를 사람들이 얼마나 알고있을까요?
아직 많지 않을거에요. 워낙 제한된 클럽에서만 플레이를 하고있기 때문이죠. 다양한 곳에서 트는게 두렵거나 하지는 않아요. 저는 특정 장르의 음악만을 플레이하고 있고, 이게 때로는 장점이 되기도 단점이 되기도 해요. 어디서 틀든 내 색깔을 낼 수 있지만, 반대로 다양한 사람들이 좋아할 만 한 음악을 들려주는 디제이는 아니죠.
앞으로 다양한 클럽에서 Oviduct를 보는 건 기대하기 어렵다고 봐야하나요?
쉽지는 않다고 봐요. 제가 플레이하는 음악 스타일이 딱 맞는 곳이 아니라면요. 근데 무엇보다 제가 디제이 하는지, 이런 음악을 하는지 아는 사람이 별로 없어요. [웃음]
본격적으로 디제이를 시작하게된 계기가 있나요?
사실 저도 이렇게 클럽으로 나오게될 줄은 몰랐습니다. 집에서 음악을 만들고하는 것들은 즐겨왔지만요. 집에 놀러온 몇몇 친구들에게 만든 것들을 보여줬고, 한번 밖에서 플레이해보는게 어떠냐는 이야길 들었어요. 특히 달파란에게서. 어쩌다 기회가 닿아 Mystik에서 플레이를 하게됬고, 가게에서 레지던트를 제안했죠.
*참고로 그는 뜨거운 감자로 활동할 때도 전자음악에 대한 욕구를 계속 갖고 있었고, 실제 앨범에도 조금씩 담았다고 한다.
대부분의 디제이들이 그렇지만 첫 라이브 플레이가 상당히 기억에 남을 것 같아요.
일단 소리가 집에서 듣던 것과 완전히 달라 놀랐어요. 제가 가져온 음악들이 완전히 생소하게 들릴 정도 였죠. 일단 저역이 어마어마했고, 저는 계속 볼륨을 줄이려고 했고, 가게에선 계속 올리려고 했죠. [웃음]
베를린에서의 생활이 궁금합니다.
테크노 음악이 거의 팝에 가까운 수준이었어요. 그리고 어느 숍에 들어가더라도 왠만큼 좋은 음악과 사운드를 즐길 수 있었어요. 클럽에 (놀러) 다니더라도 그곳의 사운드 퀄리티가 어떠냐에 관심을 많이 가지고 있어요.
한가지 흥미로운건 독일은 심지어 도시마다 음악이 조금씩 다르다는 점이에요. 베를린과 다른 도시 정도로 구분 지어볼 수 있어요. 베를린은 부유한 도시라고 보기 어렵고, 그 탓인지 음악들이 씁쓸하고 건조해요. 프랑크푸르트나 뮌헨, 함부르크 등 좀 더 부유한 도시의 음악들은 덜 그렇고, 달달한 감성11이 뭍어나기도 하죠. Mystik에서 독일 디제이들을 많이 불렀고, 출신 도시에 따라 조금씩 다른 음악을 들려주는 것이 재미있었어요.
그럼 지금 서울의 클럽씬의 방향은 어떤거 같나요?
정말 주관적인 의견입니다. 현재 한국의 정치경제적 여건이 풍족하고 건전하다고 하기는 어려워요. 당장 먹고 자는 문제를 제대로 해결하지 못하는 데 문화를 논하는게 누구에겐 상당한 사치로 보일 수도 있고요. 그런 측면에서 클럽씬이 활성화되기에 상당히 어려운 상황이죠.
사람들이 좀 더 다양한 음악을 듣도록 하기위해 할 수 있는 일은 무엇일까요?
일단 방송국에서 디제이라는 일을 오래했어요. 음악을 소개하는 일을 계속 해온 것이죠. 그런데 공영방송인 KBS도 시청률 또는 청취율이라는 잣대에서 제외될 수는 없어요. 그들의 존립이 걸린 문제인 겁니다. 아무래도 익숙한, 청취자의 취향에 맞춘 곡들을 소개할 수 밖에 없습니다. 라디오는 더이상 새로운 곡을 발견할 만 한 매체는 아닙니다.
그런데 클럽은 새로운 음악을 접하기 상당히 좋은 곳이에요. 최소한 제가 레지던트를 하는 Mystik은 음악을 정말 중요하게 생각하는 곳이에요. 언더그라운드 클럽을 지향하고 있고요. 그들은 새로운 DJ를 소개시켜주는 것을 아주 중요한 역할로 받아들이고 있습니다.
클럽에 관해 한가지만 더 묻고 싶어요. 클럽이라는 공간을 올바르게 이해하기 위해선 어떻게 해야할까요?
스스로 그리고 타인을 관대하게 대해야 곳이에요. 자기 스스로 즐거워야하는 곳이고요. 기본적으로 타인한테 피해를 주지 않는 선에서 말이죠. 누군가 춤을 정말 이상하게 춘다한들, 그게 문제가 되나요? 그리고 설사 누군가 내 발을 실수로 밟는다해도 그들을 이해할 수 있어야 해요. 왜냐하면 저도 누군가에게 그런적이 있을 수 있거든요. 그러니까 서로서로 관대해져야만 하는 곳이에요.
최근 많이 듣게되는 트랙을 소개해주세요.
마지막으로 음악을 만드는 것에 관해 묻고 싶습니다. 음악을 만든다는 것은 무엇에 비유할 수 있을까요?
정액 또는 야구와 같은 것. 분출하지 않으면 쓸모가 없고, 타석에 들어서지 않으면 아무 기록도 없을겁니다. 창피해도 좋고, 못해도 좋으니 일단 내놔야 합니다.

It’s good to meet you. We are currently sitting at the ATM, could you explain to us what what kind of a place it is?
It’s a club I used to go to before I started playing at Mystik. They don’t have a dance floor, but I can play whatever I want to play to see the audience’s reaction to it.
When people look at you behind the deck with the vinyls, they can definitely see how important you think it is.
Vinyls are not computer files. The physical condition of it is essential, and you have no option but to treat it with care. I find that very important fundamentally anyways.
Is there are reason for sticking to vinyl?
I’m not very fond of digital technology. I also buy a lot of vintage, analog instruments. They feel more lively. Its sounds often change, and even the same models sometimes have different sounds. There are times when I listen to my vinyl as a digital file, and I can totally feel a difference between the two.
What do you really care about at Mystik?
We have a dance floor, so we have to encourage the people to move in any way possible. The fact that I can control the people with the hand-selected and curated music is very cool. I can convey a vibe that also has my personality embedded within. One more thing, the people at Mystik really respect what I play, and that is just another great part.
The mixtape you have made for us today has a very smooth progression.
I love to slowly breathe and raise the tempo. In my mind, I wanted to do a five hour set. To be honest, Mystik is not the easiest road to take.
You are known as KimC to many and have performed as a band musician for quite some time. How did you first come up with becoming a DJ?
To be honest, it took me some time to introduce myself as a DJ. I just thought of it as an opportunity to simply align and curate different music. Now I have evolved and there are different elements I could use to be really innovative with my craft.
I want to know how and why you came up with the name Oviduct.
It is a tube in which the egg passes through the ovary in a women’s body. I’ve always been fascinated with the female anatomy, so I went with the name.
Do you know how many people know you as Oviduct and KimC collectively?
I don’t think many people know quite yet, since I performed at a very limited amount of venues. I’m not too afraid of playing different music and different places, but I currently stick to one vibe. I think this is a strong and a weak point at the same time. I cannot cater to many people’s taste but still possess a very unique style.
Is it going to be difficult for us to see you at different clubs from now on then?
Yes, I’d say it won’t be easy, if the venue does not have the music style I strive for. The biggest problem is, not many people know that I DJ and the type of music I play in general.
Is there are specific reason for starting to DJ?
To be honest, I did not know I’d come out to clubs like this, although I enjoyed making music at home. I’ve showed some of my creations to friends that came over, and they told me to play it. So I got a play at Mystik, and became a resident there.
I think most DJ’s first performances are very memorable.
First off, the sound was so much different from what I have heard at my house. I tried to lower the volume, but the people wanted me to turn it up.
How was living in Berlin?
Techno music is almost like pop in Berlin. Every club had pretty great techno sounds. I am very interested in the quality of sounds even when I go out to different clubs.
It’s funny, because the style of the city changes what the people like to listen to in those parts. For example, cities that are more wealthy listen to more happy, sweet-sound music then those that are less wealthy. Berlin was the latter, so there was a lot of bitter sounding music.
What do you think about the current music scene of Seoul?
Subjectively speaking, the economy in Seoul is not exactly flourishing, so I think it is equally hard for the club scenes to really grow and develop further.
What do you think we should do to make people listen to different types of music?
I’ve been a DJ at a big corporate broadcast. I’ve been introducing new music for quite some time. However, even names like KBS can’t get the views and the listens. This leads to us introducing similar music to what the listeners have already been exposed to. I don’t think radio is the place to discover new music anymore.
However, clubs are a great place to get introduced to new music. At the least, it is a place that respects the music I play at Mystik. Underground clubs are essential for introducing new music and new DJs.
I want to ask one more thing about clubs. What is the proper way to use the space and understand it?
You have to respect yourself and the people around you, and most importantly, you have to have fun yourself. If someone is dancing a weird way, is that really a problem? If someone steps on your foot accidentally, you have to understand them and forgive, because everyone has done that before.
What are some tracks you have been listening to recently?
Lastly, how would you describe music as an analogy?
I think it is like baseball. If you do not go into the batter’s box there will be no record. No matter how embarrassing or bad it is, you have to go out there and try.
