안녕하세요. 반갑습니다. 우리는 당신의 존재를 안지는 꽤 되었어요. 보통 본인을 소개할 때 어떻게 하는 편인가요?
테크노를 기반으로 딥하우스와 하우시 테크노를 함께 들려주는 디제이에요. 특히나 깔끔한 비트 위에 세련된 악기들을 얹는 걸 좋아해요.

그러면 지금 좋아하는 것들이 디제이를 시작하고 나서 접하게 된 건가요? 
고등학교 때 까지만 해도 저는 90년대 가요를 들었어요. 디제이를 시작하면서부터 전자음악들 을 찾아 듣기 시작했어요. 세상에 너무나도 많은 음악들이 있었고 저는 테키한 사운드들에 관 심을 가졌어요.

그렇군요. 사실 클럽에 놀러 다니다가 디제잉에 관심을 갖는 경우도 많아요. 당시에 클러빙도 즐기는 편이었나요? 
강남에 있는 여러 클럽들을 돌아다니는 편이었어요. 그때는 EDM이 장악하기 전이었어요.

지금의 강남클럽과는 사뭇 다른 모습이었겠군요. 
당시 클럽 Answer에는 Dguru가 있었어요. 클럽 Eden에는 E-you, Ziro, Yeonjun 등이 디 렉팅을 하고 있었고요. 그리고 2011년 경에는 당시 최대 규모로 클럽 Ellui가 청담동에 오픈 을 했어요. 현재 합정동 클럽 Vurt를 이끌고 있는 DJ I, Suna, Unjin 등이 이 곳을 이끌었 고, 게다가 Mang Esilo, Conan 등이 레지던트로 있었으니 정말 좋은 음악을 들을 수 있는 기회가 많았어요. 가장 좋아했던 클럽 에덴에는 Tiga나 Louie Vega, Bassment Jaxx가 내한 하기도 했어요. 정말 좋았어요. 특히 Tiga는 지금까지도 좋아하고 있어요. 제가 에덴에 마지 막으로 갔던 날은 Paul Chambers의 내한 날이었고 그 이후 에덴은 이름을 몇 번 바꿨고 현 재는 문을 닫았어요.

흥미롭군요. 다시 디제잉으로 돌아가봅시다. 디제잉을 배운 건 거의 독학이나요? 
맞아요. 레슨을 받거나 하지는 않았어요. 그냥 장비를 만져가며 터득했죠. 어깨너머 배우거나 요.

사실 대부분 그렇게 시작할 거에요. 예나 지금이나 디제잉을 쉽고 체계적으로 배울 만 한 곳 이 거의 없죠. 그럼에도 어쨌든 당신은 점점 씬으로 들어오고 있어요. 베드룸 디제이에서 관 객이 있는 라이브 무대로 나오게 된 계기가 있나요?
가까운 친구들끼리 뭔가 해보고 싶었어요. 무작정 플레이 할 수 있는 곳들을 찾아다녔죠. 그 러다 찾게 된 곳이 가로수길에 있는 Social Club 이었어요. 그곳에서 결국 레지던트도 하게 되었고요. 그러면서 셋을 좀 더 신중히 준비하게 되었고, 라이브러리도 넓어졌어요.

DJ로서 특히나 끌리는 지점이 있었던 걸까요? 
제가 좋아하는 음악을 공유할 수 있다는 것. 그리고 그들의 반응을 살펴볼 수 있다는 점이 좋 았어요.

지금 소속된 디뮤지엄 Eta에 대해 설명해주세요. 
일단 댄스 클럽은 아니에요. 라운지에 훨씬 가깝죠. 인테리어에 힘이 많이 실려 있어서, 아주 자유분방한 음악을 틀기는 어려워요. 그래도 다양한 음악을 플레이하는 디제이들을 섭외해보 려 노력했어요. 다들 각자의 방식대로 분위기를 끌어가는데, 정말 흥미로워요. 저도 그것들을 보며 공부 중이에요.
사실 라운지 플레이는 상당히 까다로워요. 흥을 돋구워야 하지만, 그들을 춤추게 할 필요 까 진 없죠.
그래도 가끔은 튀는 음악들을 던져보는 편이에요. 거기서 사람들이 재미를 느끼는지를 살펴보 는 거죠. 어쩌면 가게에서 싫어할 수도 있겠네요. [웃음]

당신을 처음 발견했을 때가 떠올라요. 우리는 사운드클라우드에서 당신의 믹스테잎을 들었죠. 2-3년 전쯤입니다.
네. 믹스테잎을 자주 올리는 편은 아니에요. 고작 1년에 하나 정도. 특별한 의미는 없고 당시 저의 취향들을 남겨보고자는 취지에서 [Amenities] 라는 이름 아래 A로 시작하는 믹스들을 올리고 있어요.

당신은 이번 믹스테잎을 부지런히 보내주었고, 우린 매우 고맙게 생각하고 있어요. 인터뷰를 올리기 전 더 많이 들어볼 수 있으니, 당신에 대해 더 깊게 이해할 수 있거든요.  
요즘 제가 가장 보여주고 싶은 것들을 담았어요. 기승전결을 갖추려 노력했고요.

이 씬에서 당신의 역할이 있다면 무얼까요? 
서울의 댄스플로어(큰 클럽들)가 엄청나게 멋졌던 시절을 경험한 거의 끝자락에 있었던 사 람으로서, 멋진 댄스플로어들을 다시 만드는 것이 목표에요. 물론 DJ로서 저는 그 움직임, 방 향성에 조금이나마 보탬이 되고 싶은 것이고요.

이제 막 댄스클럽 그리고 그곳의 음악에 관심을 갖게된 이들에게 하고 싶은 말을 하며 이번 인터뷰를 마무리해보죠. 
‘큰 클럽에서 틀기 위해서는 커머셜한 음악을 해야해’ 같은 생각들은 꼭 맞지 않는다고 생각 해요. 테크노를 예로 들자면, 꾸미지 않은 공허한 공간에서의 테크노도 멋지지만, 잘 꾸며 놓 은 현대적인 공간에서 울려 퍼지는 테크노도 멋있어요. 날씨 좋은 대낮에 야외에서 듣는 테크 노도 엄청 멋있고요. 결국 공간은 DJ가 끌고 가는 것인데, 큰 클럽에서 트는 음악, 작은 베뉴 에서 트는 음악이 정해져 있다는 생각이 굳어지는 것은 위험하죠.   끝.

Hello, nice to meet you. We’ve known you for quite some time. How do you usually introduce yourself?
I’m a DJ that mostly play techno deep house / house-y techno. I like to use a clean beat and some sophisticated, modern instruments.

So did you get exposed to the preferred style of music after you started to DJ? 
Even in my high school days I listened to 90’s pop songs. As I started to DJ I got exposed to electronic music. There were so many different styles and I was interested in the techy sounds.

Truth be told, many become interested in DJing as people go to clubs. Did you like to go clubbing during the time?
I used to go to many clubs in Gangnam. I was before EDM.

It must’ve been quite different from the Gangnam clubs now!
At the time, Dguru was at Club Answer, and at Eden there was E-you, Ziro, Yeonjun who did the directing. In 2011 the biggest club at the time, Ellui, opened in Chongdam. The DJ’s that lead Club Vurt were at Ellui, and Mang Esilo, Conan and althers were residents, and I was able to listen to some great music. My favourite club was Eden, and so Tiga, Louie Vega and Dassment Jaxx played in Korea as well, and it was great. The last time I went to Eden was wen Paul Chambers played and they are now closed.

Interesting. Let’s talk more about DJing. Did you learn to DJ by yourself? 
Yes, I didn’t get lessons or anything. I just messed around with the equipment. I think most DJs start out like this.

Now or then it’s hard to find a place to learn DJing easy and simple. Regardless, you emerge into the scene gradually. Is there a reason you became an onstage DJ from a bedroom one? 
I wanted to collaborate on something with close friends. I looked for places I could just start playing. As I went hunting for a space, Social Club in Garosu fit the criteria. I became a resident there, and so I prepared for my sets meticulously, and my library also expanded.

Is there something especially great or appealing about being a DJ? 
The fact that I could share the music that I like was the most appealing thing, and I also enjoyed how I could look at the audience’s reactions as well.

Please explain DMuseum’s Eta that you’re currently involved in.
Firstly, it’s not a dance club; it’s more of a lounge. There’s a big emphasis on the interior, and so it’s hard to play everything I want to. Nevertheless, I tried to cast DJs that played different types of music. Each and every one of them play in a different way, and it’s so fascinating to me. I watch and study the different DJs every time.

Frankly, playing at lounges are quite difficult. You have to make the audience excited, but not to the point where they start to dance. 
Even though that’s the case, I try to play some vibrant tracks once in a while. I examine if they dig it.

I remember the first time I ever discovered you. We listened to your mixtape 2-3 years ago. 
Yes, I don’t like to upload mixtapes too often. It didn’t have any meaning, and at the time I just wanted to leave my preferences at the time.

You sent us your mix quickly, and we’re very thankful for that. I can listen to it before uploading it, so I was able to get more emotion and intention out of it. 
I put everything that I want to show these days onto the mix.

What is your purpose in this scene?
I would love to make finest dance vibe at bigger dance floor as I’m the one who have a good memory about Gangnam’s scene before EDM had came in.

So, it’s time to finish our interview. Let’s say something to those who just started to get into this scene.
I would say “Never have any stereotype views like huge club must play EDM all the time”. For instance, techno is proper for small room, but also huge, big, modern place even at daytime. There is no any rules about genre. DJ should suggest music and be a indicator.
