안녕하세요! 디제잉과 프로듀싱을 하고있는 김한별 aka 김일성(ILLSUNG)이라고 합니다. 현재는 압구정 타임즈에서 일을 하고 있어요!
이번 골목길 믹스테잎에 대해 설명해주세요.
이번 골목길 믹스테잎은 편안하게 들을 수 있으면서도 신나는 믹스테잎으로 준비해봤습니다. 요즘같이 꽃도피고 날씨 좋은 날 집에서 편안하게 쉬거나 드라이브 하면서 들으시면 좋을 거 같아요! 또 제가 좋아하는 노래들 모음집이라해도 과언이 아닐만큼 제가 좋아하는 트랙들로 꽉꽉 채웠답니다!
엄선된 곡들이군요! DJ가 되고 싶다고 생각하게된 계기가 뭔가요?
고등학생때 엠넷(Mnet)에서 진행했던 디제이 프로그램인 헤드라이너(Headliner)라는 프로그램이 있었어요. 거기서 킹맥님을 본 후에 디제이라는 직업에 대한 제 인식이 완전히 뒤바뀌게 되어 디제이에 대한 동경이 생겼고, 그로인해 막연히 DJ가 되고싶다고 생각했었답니다.
본인은 어떤 스타일의 DJ라고 할 수 있나요?
자연스러움과 편안함인거같아요. 평상시 일상이나 제 모습, 음악, 제 주변 모든것들이 자연스럽고 편한것들을 많이 찾고, 추구하거든요. 그래서인지 셋을짜거나 연습을 할 때 제 자신을 보게되면 ‘자연스러움’ 대해 신경을 많이 쓴다는 것을 알게 되었어요.
그렇담 DJ 할 때 가장 신경쓰는 부분이 뭔가요?
우선 좋은 노래가 일순위이고, 그 다음으로는 곡과 곡사이의 연결이나 전체적인 분위기의 흐름이 자연스럽고 편한걸 가장 신경씁니다.
‘좋은 노래’에 대해 좀 더 구체적으로 설명해줄 수 있나요?

현재 일하고있는 Times에 합류하게된 계기가 있나요?
지금 타임즈에 매니저로있는 오빠와 SOAP 1층에서 같이 일했던 적이 있었어요. 그래서 타임즈의 직원이 되기 전에도 한두번정도 헬퍼로 일하러 간 적이 있었다가, 코로나 규제도 점차 풀리고 사람이 많아져서 매니저 오빠가 같이 일해보는게 어떻겠냐고 제안해 합류하게 되었어요!
혹시 가장 기억에 남는 이벤트가 언제인가요?
가장 기억에 남는 이벤트는 타임즈 1주년때 였던거 같아요. 그때 스페셜 게스트로 온 자루반달(Jarreau Vandal)님의 플레잉을 실제로 처음봤는데 너무 좋았고, 많은 분들이 타임즈를 축하해주러 와서 다같이 즐기고 행복했던 그 분위기가 너무 좋았어요. 손님분들중에도 타임즈의 1주년을 위해 다음날 본인 회사에 연차를 내고 오신 분들도 있어서 정말 멋졌답니다!
어떻게 음악을 디깅하고 구매하나요?
음악 디깅을 보통 애플뮤직, 스포티파이나 사운드클라우드에서 많이해요. 제가 리믹스 된 음악들을 좋아하는데 사운드클라우드에서 숨겨져있는 좋은 리믹스들을 찾아서 구매 하기도 하고, 애플 뮤직이나 스포티파이에서는 꽂힌 노래들을 몇개를 정해서 스테이션을 생성해서 디깅하기도 해요! 또 타임즈에서 일하다가 뒤를 돌아보게 만드는 음악들은 보통 샤잠을 바로 켜서 노래를 찾기도 해요. 음악들은 애플 뮤직에서 바로 구매하고 있습니다.
‘헤드라이너’를 통해 DJ를 접하고, ‘애플 뮤직’으로 음악을 구매한다니, 올드스쿨 DJ들에겐 매우 흥미로운 이야기일 거에요. 세대차이 같은 걸 느껴본 적 있나요?
제가 디제이를 접한 계기와 경로를 들으시고 신기해 하시는 분들이 계시기도 하더라구요. 저는 제가 시작으로 접했던 것들이 그저 당연하다고만 여겼는데 생각해보니 여기서 세대차이가 난다고 느껴지네요! 그런데 그 이외의 것들에서는 세대차이가 따로 느껴진다거나 하지는 않는것 같아요. 제 사장님이시자 오랫동안 디제이를 하고 계신 신독(Sin Dogg)사장님이나, 얀(Yann)사장님, 팔렌스(Fallens) 사장님이랑 얘기를 나누다보면 세대차이가 난다고 느껴지기 보다는 되려 저를 공감해주시고 다양한 팁들을 더 전수해주시려고 하셔서인지 세대차이가 난다고 느껴지지는 않았던거 같아요.
가장 영향을 많이 받은 혹은 가장 좋아하는 아티스트가 누군가요?
BRLLNT입니다. 어릴때 사운드클라우드에서 음악을 찾아다니는걸 좋아했는데 거기서 Soap Records에 올라온 브릴리언트님의 Blessed를 듣게되고 저는 그때부터 브릴리언트님의 팬이 됐고 그 후로 그분의 음악들을 정말 많이 들었어요. 그분의 음악을 들을때마다 저도 브릴리언트님 같은 사운드를 가진 음악을 만들고 싶다고 생각했어요. 성인이 되고 좋은 기회로 프로듀싱을 브릴리언트님께 배우게 되었는데, 매번 느꼈던건 그 누구보다 음악을 진정으로 사랑하실 뿐만 아니라 많은 노력과 시간을 쏟아부으시는 모습을 보게되고 정말 더 존경하게 되었어요. 또 매 주마다 디제잉 플레잉 하실때도 본인만의 리믹스를 만들어오셔서 새로운 리믹스를 트시는데 그때마다 많은 자극을 받고있습니다. 그리고 음악적인 부분에서도 인간적인 부분에서도 가장 존경하고 많은 영향을 받는 분이에요.

파티씬과 관련이 깊은 ‘패션’, ‘댄스’, ‘술’ 중 가장 관심이 많은 것과 이유가 있을까요?
술에 가장 관심이 많아요! 파티와 술은 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 동반자라고 생각하거든요. 뭐든지 과유불급 이지만 적당한 알코올의 힘은 파티를 더욱 더 즐겁게 만들어 주는 거 같아요. 특히 저같은 경우에는 소심한 성격을 술이 누그러지게 해주어서 술을 마시면 파티를 더욱 더 즐길 수 있게 되는거 같아요. 그리고 제가 워낙 술을 좋아하기도 합니다, 하하!!
이제 마지막 질문이에요, 5년 뒤 당신은 어떤 모습일까요?
5년 뒤에 저는 디제이로서든, 프로듀서로든, 저 김한별 자체로든 제가 어떤 모습이 되어도 사람들 앞에서 선 제 모습이 지금보다는 더 편해지고 자연스러워졌으면 좋겠습니다. 또한 스스로 당당하고 의연한 제가 되어있지 않을까 기대를 해봅니다! 하하 그리고 제가 지금껏 받은 도움들 모두 제가 나눌 수 있는 사람이 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 감사합니다.
Hi, Please introduce yourself briefly.
Hi! I’m Han Byeol Kim a.k.a. ILLSUNG, a DJ and producer. I’m currently working for TIMES, Apgujeong.
Tell me about your Golmokgil mixtape.
You can listen cozily and with excitement at the same time! It would be nice to listen while driving or relaxing at home on sunny days with blooming flowers like these days. Also, it’s packed full of my favorite tracks, so you can call it ‘ILLSUNG’s FAV COLLECTION’ for real.
What made you want to become a DJ?
When I was high school student, there were DJ’s survival TV show called ‘Headliner’. I saw DJ Kingmck for the first time on that TV show, and that experience changed my thoughts about DJ to respect to them. From then on, I vaguely thought that I wanted to be a DJ.
How would you define your own style?
My style can be defined by naturality and cozyness. I am looking for and pursuing things that are natural and cozy in every part of my daily life, my outfit, music and whatsoever. I realize that I care a lot about naturality when I practice or composing mixsets.
What do you pay most attention to when DJing then?
First of all, good music come first, and secondly, the transition between tunes. And the flow of the overall atmosphere should be natural and cozy.
Then, what is ‘Good Music’ you think?
People have various statndards for good music, but I think ‘good music’ is one what don’t get tired of even listening to hundreds of times. How did you come to join TIMES?
I worked with current manager of TIMES before at SOAP 1F. So, I worked as a helper several times before I became an employee of TIMES. As the COVID-19 restrictions were gradually relieved, more people came, he asked me if I would like to work together at TIMES, so I joined!
What is the most memorable event?
The most memorable event was the 1st anniversary of TIMES. Actually, I saw Jarreau Vandal‘s play as a special guest for the first time, and it was so good. Many people came to celebrate TIMES, and I loved the atmosphere where everyone enjoyed happily. Some guests who have the next day off for the celebration to TIMES’ first anniversary were so cool.
How do you dig and buy some music?
I usually dig music on Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud. I like the remixed version, so I used to look for and buy good remixes hidden on SoundCloud. On Apple Music and Spotify, I select some tunes that I love and I search for the other tunes on generated stations. Also, there are some tunes that makes me look back when I’m working at TIMES. I turn on Shazam right away and save it. I usually purchase music through Apple Music.
Getting to know DJs through ‘Headliner’ and purchasing music through ‘Apple Music’. It may be a very interesting story for OGs who have been active for 10 or 20 years. Have you ever felt such a generation gap when you’re in this DJ scene?
There are some people surprised to my way to get encounter with DJing for the first time. I haven’t thought my starting point for DJing is strange before, generation gap was here! But except this point, I think there are none of it. When I talk with Sin Dogg, Yann and Fallens who are my bosses and senior DJs, they sympathize with me and try to give me various tips. I don’t feel generation gap with them!
Who is the most influenced or favorite artist?
BRLLNT. When I was young, I liked to search music on SoundCloud, and there I heard his ‘Blessed’ on SOAP Records, I became a fan of his tunes from then on, and since then I’ve listened to his music a lot. Every time I listened to his music, I thought I wanted to make sounds like BRLLNT’s. When I get older, I got a great opportunity to learn producing from him. Every time I felt that he not only truly loves music more than anyone else, but also puts a lot of effort and time into it. I’ve come to respect him more. Also, when he DJs every week, he plays his own remix. I get a lot of inspiration every time. I respect him and he inspires me musically and humanly.

Among ‘fashion,’ ‘dance,’ and ‘alcohol,’ which are closely related to the party scene, what are you most interested in and why?
I’m most interested in ‘alcohol’! I think parties and alcohol are inseparable. Too much is as bad as too little, but the moderate amount of alcohol seems to make the party more enjoyable. Especially in my case, alcohol softens my timid personality, so I think I can enjoy the party more when I drink. And I love to drink haha

Five years from now, whether it’s as a DJ, as a producer, or as myself, Kim Han-byul, I hope that myself in front of people will be more comfortable and natural than now.
