안녕하세요. 간단한 본인 소개를 부탁드립니다.

바 에코를 운영중이며, 에코와 이름이 유사한 에코시스템이라는 크리에이티브 에이전시를 운영하고 있습니다. 음악, 미디어, 크리에이티브 라이팅과 관계된 일을 합니다.

Echo라는 공간에 대한 개략적인 소개를 부탁드립니다. 혹시 레게음악에서 자주 쓰이는 에코 라는 이펙터에서 따온건가요?

에코는 의미적, 음성적, 시각적으로 또한 한글과 영문 양쪽으로 모두 마음에 드는 단어여서, 예전부터 막연하게 혼자 뭘 한다면 ‘에코’로 해야지 했습니다. 말씀하신 대로 제가 레게를 특히 좋아해서 에코는 가족 같은 단어기도 했고요.

삼각지, 스탠딩(현재는 의자가 마련되어 있음), 좁은공간, DJ 부스 등 조금 매니악한 이미지의 공간이에요. 

에코에 관해서는 비즈니스적인 부분을 거의 생각하지 않았어요. 자메이칸 사운드의 퍼포먼스를 가장 잘 낼 수 있는 환경이 중요했죠. 예를들어 초기에 스탠딩을 고집한 것은 사람의 귀 높이와 트위터의 높이가 일치해야 가장 좋은 소리를 들을 수 있기 때문이었어요. 스피커 높이가 175센티미터거든요. 찾아가기 어렵고, 불편하고, 다른 여러 면에서 손님이 맞춰야 하는 공간인데, ‘그럼에도 불구하고’ 오시는 손님들에게 언제나 깊은 감사의 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 

과거엔 어떤 일을 하셨고, 결국 이 공간을 만들게 된 건가요?

오랫동안 DAZED & CONFUSED, GQ 같은 잡지 에디터로 일했고, 그밖의 음악과 관련된 다양한 독립적인 활동을 했어요. 앨범과 믹스테이프도 냈고, 뮤직페스티벌 서울인기, 브랜디드 미디어 플랫폼(BUD X BEATS)과 레코드숍(우주만물)을 운영하기도 했죠. 일을 시작한 이래 처음으로 이제 뭘 하지?, 라고 자문할 정도의 여유가 코로나 기간에 생겼는데, 꿈, 환상 그리고 착각을 하게 됐어요. 오랫동안 자메이칸 사운드 시스템을 운영해보고 싶었거든요. 이 시스템을 운영하기 만만한 형식은 바였고, 바를 통해 나이가 들수록 소극적으로 변하는 인간관계, 한국의 음악적 다양성 그리고 바이닐 컬처에 관한 회의적인 생각을 스스로 개선해보고 싶었어요.

최근 몇년간 삼각지에 뮤직 바들이 늘어나던 시기를 기억하는데, 삼각지를 선택한 특별한 이유가 있을까요?

제가 오랫동안 살아온 동네라 익숙한대, 마침 동네가 활발해지고 있었어요. 여기에 바를 차리면 더욱 더 일하는 기분이 안 들 것 같았어요.

요즘 리스닝 바의 공식처럼 여겨지는 사운드시스템인 Altec과 Mclntosh의 조합이 아닌점이 재미있습니다. 

‘Country Act’라는 일본 나고야 소재 자메이칸 사운드 시스템 메이커의 커스텀 모델 Sound Man EDT라는 스피커입니다. 야마하 파워 앰프 두 대를 고음과 저음에 각각 따로 쓰고요. 마스터링 엔지니어에게 룸 튜닝을 의뢰해 이퀄라이저를 셋업했고요.

 ‘Country Act’는 예전에 잡지에서 일할 때 이메일 인터뷰를 한 적이 있어요. 그분의 철학이 상당히 인상적이어서, 다른 곳 알아볼 것도 없이 신뢰로 맡겼습니다. 자메이칸 사운드 시스템이 이 공간의 시작이었으니, 애초에 다른 고려가 필요 없었죠.

올 초 리뉴얼을 거쳐 레코드샵을 겸하는 바로 바뀐걸로 알고있습니다. (aka 에코 시즌2) 

에코는 처음부터 지금까지 바이닐만으로 음악을 트는데요. 그 전까지는 개인 콜렉션을 자주 바꿔가며 틀었고, 지금은 모두 판매하는 음반이에요. 작년까지 9년간 운영했던 우주만물을 닫으면서 남아있는 음반이 많았고, 저는 바이닐에 관해서라면 아주 조금의 호기심만 있어도 직접 사서 확인해 보는 쪽이라 언제나 재고 잔치거든요. 그게 첫 번째 이유고요.

두 번째 이유는 손님들에게 좀 더 많은 서비스를 드리고 싶었어요. “먹을 수 없는 안주를 판다”고 썼는데, 이 불편한 공간에서 음악 감상과 술 말고 다른 즐길 거리가 있었으면 했죠.

처음엔 레게음악만 나오는 공간으로 오해했습니다.

처음부터 지금까지 일관되게 다양한 음악을 소개하고 있어요. 다만 에코에서 항상 좀 더 집중하려는 부분은 비서구권 음악이에요. 아시아 음악 그리고 소위 제3세계라고 차별적으로 범주화되는 음악들.

어찌보면 아류 음악이잖아요? 혹시 너무 어색해하거나, 음악 리퀘스트를 하는 경우는 없나요?

많죠. 완곡하게 거절할 수 있는 프로세스를 만들었어요. 에코는 플레이어가 턴테이블밖에 없거든요. 가지고 있는 바이닐이면 틀어드리겠다고 말씀드리는데 대부분 있을 리가 없죠.

“바이닐”이란 매체에 집중하고자 하는 이유가 있나요?

첫째, 인류의 대중음악 유산은 압도적으로 많은 양이 바이닐에 있고요.

둘째, 바이닐은 음악산업(차트) 중심, 영미권 중심의 음악적 사고방식에서 벗어나게 해요. 스무살 무렵 비스티보이즈가 운영하는 웹라디오 ‘레어그루브 라디오’를 열심히 들었어요. 음악을 못 견디게 좋아하고, 시디를 열심히 사는 학생이었는데, 레어그루브 라디오에 나오는 이 놀라운 음악들은 도대체 살 수가 없더라고요. 전부 시디로 나온 적 없는, 바이닐만 존재하는 음반들이었죠. 그렇게 호기심을 갖게 됐고, 지금까지 바이닐을 사고 있어요.

특히나 바이닐, CD같은 피지컬한 음악 매체를 수집하거나 소개하는 분들께 궁금한 것은 그것들을 어떻게 찾고 모으냐는 겁니다. 

음악을 디깅하고 바잉하는 방식은 방점을 어디에 찍느냐에 따라 천차만별일 거예요. 제 경우를 말씀드리면, 다른 분야에 대해서도 마찬가지인데, 예전부터 이 행위가 ‘수집’이 되면 안 된다는 점을 계속 의식해요. 저는 수집이라기보다 ‘문제의식’이라는 단어를 써요. 그때그때 제 관심과 그 시대와 관련된 어떤 문제의식이 있고 거기에 적합한 정보를 축적하면서 구매해요. 물론 음악은 감정적이고 정서적인 부분이 커서 단지 십대 때 들었던 음악을 갖고 싶어서 사기
도 하지만요.

조언을 드리자면, 남들이 좋다는 것에 휘둘리지 말라는 거요. 제임스 설터는 “인생에서 즐거운 일 가운데 하나는 위인들을 재배치할 수 있고, 내 마음에 들지 않는 어떤 인물을 강등시킬 수 있다는 점”이라고 말하면서, 자신은 헤밍웨이를 아래로 내려보내 “지하실에서 먼지를 뒤집어 쓰고 있다”고 말해요. 레전드든 인기가수든 상관없어요. 지금 내가 듣기에 별로면 별론 거예요. 물론 얼마든지 나중에 좋아질 수 있다는 가능성은 열어두고요. 그렇게 자발적으로 뭔가를 해나가면 어떻게든 길이 생기고 인연을 만나요.

요즘 (개인적으로) 가장 많이 듣는 앨범을 소개해주세요. 

Kino (Victor Choi)의 8집을 소개하고 싶네요. 작년에 한국에서 바이닐 리이슈가 됐는데 거의 팔리지 않은 것 같더라고요. 저도 뒤늦게 사서 최근 많이 듣습니다. 송라이팅이 정말 좋은 포스트 펑크예요. 더 큐어가 많이 생각나죠.

골목길 믹스셋에 대해 설명하자면요?

한마디로 ‘아시안 레게팝 믹스’예요. 처음엔 한국 레게팝을 파고들었어요. 신촌블루스의 ‘골목길’처럼, 레게라고 의식하지 못했던 것을 레게로 재인지하는 재미가 있었어요. 한국 레게팝 믹스테이프 <태평>을 내고, 이후 아시아로 자연스럽게 관점이 넓어졌어요. 아시안 소울, 훵크는 사실 너무 잘 따라해서 정말 그럴싸한데, 레게의 경우는 너무 자의적으로 만든 이상한 곡이 많아요. 그 뒤틀리고 굴절된 면에서 아시안의 냄새가 더 잘 난다고 생각해요.

바 전체에 심미적 요소가 굉장히 많다고 느껴요. 인테리어부터 로고, 소품까지요.

아름다운 것에 대한 정의는 각각 다르겠지만, 그렇게 보이셨다면 에코가 그래도 보편적인 데가 있었나보네요. 다행입니다. 저는 아름다운 것의 이유를 항상 생각해요. 영업장이니 누구나 자기 관점에서 아름답게 만들려고 할텐데, 제가 달랐던 점이 있다면 아름다움이라는 추상적인 감각에 대해서도 이유를 가지려 했다는 거요.

또한 이재민 디자이너님의 기여를 빼놓을 수 없죠. 처음엔 다른 분을 소개받으려고 여쭤본 거였는데(그분 입장에서 재능낭비라 생각했기 때문에…), 직접 하고 싶다고 의욕과 관심을 보이셨어요. 물어본 적은 없지만, 이재민 실장님도 이유를 갖고 있는 디자이너라고 생각해요. 그래서 단지 그냥 예쁜 게 아니라 이 디자인이 지금, 이곳에, 그들 속에 있어야하는 이유가 있죠.

“먹을 수 없는 안주를 판다”는 이야기를 직접 하시기도 했어요. 어줍잖게 허세 그득한 장소가 아닌 것 같아 오히려 호감이 가기도 합니다. 

예를 들어 지금 보유 중인 재고로 ‘갓파더’를 만들 수 있는데 메뉴에 없고 요청으로 만들어 드리지도 않아요. 오만한 것이 아니라 할 수 있는 것에 집중하고 싶거든요. 에코의 술은 대부분 시그니처 칵테일이죠.

만약 에코 시즌3가 있다면 어떤 모습일까요?

친구들이 좀 더 편안하게 올 수 있는 공간이면 좋겠네요. 불편할 걸 뻔히 아니까 놀러오라고 적극적으로 말을 못하거든요. 하하.

Hello, please introduce yourself briefly.

I run a bar Echo, and creative agency called Echo System, which has a similar name to Echo. I do work that is related to music, media, and creative writing.

Please give me a brief introduction to the bar. (Did you get the word ‘echo’ from the effector used a lot in reggae music?)

Echo is a word that I like both meaningfully, phonetically, and visually, and in both Korean and English, so I have vaguely decided to use ‘echo’ if I make something. As you said, I especially like reggae music too.

Samgak-ji, standing bar (now chairs are in place), narrow space, DJ booth, etc. It seems a bit maniac. 

I actually don’t know much about its business approaches, but building Jamaican sound system is the most important thing for me. At the beginning I request our guests to enjoy their drink while standing to make their ears and the speakers at the same level(175cm). Anyways, It’s located at the weird spot, inconvenient, and in many other ways you have to fit in, but you’re “nevertheless” coming. I’m always deeply grateful to the customers.

What had you done in the past, and ended up creating this space?

I had worked for the magazine DAZED & CONFUSED and GQ for a long time, and done a lot of independent activities related to music. I’ve released albums and mixtapes, and run festivals 서울인기, branded media platform BUD X BEATS and a record shop 우주만물. 

The pandemic gave me enough time to think about my future work, so I dreamed, chased a fantasy, then had a kind of illusion in the end. Having a Jameikan sound system is what I had long dreamed of. Owning a bar seemed appropriate to achieve that. Deep down inside, I wanted to  improve myself in my skepticism about relationships as I get older, Korean musical diversity and vinyl culture that change passively.

I remember the time when the number of music bars in Samgak-Ji increased in recent years. is there a particular reason for choosing this area?

First of all, it was a neighborhood I had lived in for a long time, so I was familiar with it, and the town was becoming popular. I thought it wouldn’t feel like  a typical worker If my bar locate around here. 

It’s interesting that it’s not a combination of Altec and Mcntosh, the sound systems that are considered to be the formula for listening bars these days. 

This is a custom model called Sound Man EDT from a Zameikan sound system maker in Nagoya, Japan. He uses two Yamaha power amplifiers for high and low notes separately. I asked a mastering engineer to tune the room and set up the equalizer.

The Country Act was previously interviewed by email when I was working for a magazine. His philosophy was so impressive that I trusted him without having to look elsewhere. The Zameikan Sound System was the beginning of the space.

As far as I know, Echo went through a renewal process earlier this year, selling records. (aka Eco Season 2) 

I have been playing only vinyl since the beginning. Before the renewal, I only had played my personal collection, but now all the records are for sale. I had a lot of vinyls stocked at 우주만물, which I had run for 9 years. My curiosity drove me to buy a bunch of records and now I need to sell them all. 

Second, I wanted to provide more service to my customers. We have some foods that are never recommended, hence I hope our customers enjoy something more than just music and alcohol.

At first, I thought it was a space where only reggae music came out.

No, I have consistently introduced a variety of music from the beginning to the present. However, the part that I always try to focus more on in the echo is non-Western music. Asian music and the so-called Third World music that is differentiatedly categorized are welcomed here. 

It’s subculture music, right? How do you reply to some requests?

There are a lot and I’m trying to refuse in a roundabout way. Echo is vinyl only bar, so If I had the one they requested I would play, but the problem is most of them are not on my collection. 

Is there any specific reason why you want to focus on “Vinyl”?

At first, the legacy of pop music has been recorded on vinyl. Secondly, vinyl helps us to have an unbiased perspective on the music industry which is an american-driven market.

When I was 20 years old, I listened to “Rare Groove Radio,” a web radio show run by Beastie Boys. I was a student who loved music and collected CDs, but I couldn’t get all these amazing pieces of music on Rare Groove radio becuase they were mainly vinyl-only albums. That’s how I got my curiosity, and why I have been buying vinyl until now. 

Especially for those who collect or introduce physical music media such as vinyl and CDs, the question is how to find and collect them. 

The way you dig and buy music will vary widely depending on where you focus. In my case, it’s the same with other areas, “collecting” itself is not the thing. I prefer the word “critical mind” rather than just “collect”. I follow my interests and awareness of a certain era, then purchase vinyls when I get significant information. Of course, I often rely on my emotions like I just buy music I listened to as a teenager. 

My advice is, don’t be swayed by other people’s rate and feelings. A novelist James Salter said “One of the fun things in life is being able to redeploy the great men and demote someone you don’t like,”, moving Hemingway down; he’s gathering dust in the basement. No matter if you’re a legend or a popular singer. If you don’t feel good, it’s not good, but just be open-minded for the future when you like it by any chance. Trust yourself, then the door will be open for you. 

Please introduce the album you listen to the most these days. 

I would like to introduce a legendary Russian musician named Kino(Victor Choi) and his 8th album, which is his last one. This was reissued in Korea, so I bought the vinyl and listen a lot thesedays. It’s post-funk music and reminds me the rock band ‘the cure’.

What about the Golmokgil mixtape? 

To sum up, it’s an Asian Reggae Pop Mix. At the beginning, I dig some Korean reggae pop like ‘골목길’ by Sinchon Blues, which is not recognized as reggae in Korea. It seemed fun. I released Korean reggae pop mix ‘태평’ first and then my interest have broaden to Asian music.

Asian soul and funk music have grown up enough about motivating some western music, but Asian reggae seems a bit weird. I think those distorted aspects Asian reggae present its unique feature.  

I think there are a lot of aesthetic elements in the overall content of the bar. Starting with the interior, the logo, props, etc.

There may be different definitions of beauty, but if you recognize it, the echo must have had some universal beauty at least. I always think about the reason for what is beautiful. Everyone in the business would try to make their works beautiful, but the difference was that I also tried to have a reason for the abstract sense of beauty. 

Also, we can’t leave out the contribution of designer Jamin Lee. At first, I was asking to be introduced to someone else because I thought it would be too little work considering his talent. Nevertheless, he showed enthusiasm and interest in participating. I never asked, but I suppose he also looked for a reason. Just being pretty is not a thing, every element has a reason to be there. 

You once mentioned “We sell side dishes that you can’t eat”. I felt good about it because it’s not bluff.  

It is a problem to only have signature drinks. For example, we can make Godfather, but don’t serve it. I’m not arrogant, but I just want to be good at what I can.

What would it look like if there is season 3?

I hope it’s a place where my friends can come more comfortably.I rarely tell my friends to come by because it’s not that cozy and comfortable space. 🙂
