오브옉트 레코드바(Objktt Record Bar)라고 합니다. 명동 끄트머리에 엘리베이터 없는 4층에 위치하고 있는 작은 공간입니다. 편안하게 음악을 들으며 시간을 보낼 수 있는 허영심없는 공간입니다. 참고로 ‘오브옉트’는 오브젝트라는 영단어를 독일어로 표현한 거에요. 내가 원하는 다양한 물건을 채워 넣으려고 그렇게 지었어요.

명동. 이 공간은 약간은 저의 디자인 스튜디오 개념으로 시작한 공간입니다. 고층 그리고 사람이 많이 없는 곳을 택하려고 했는데 그전에 웅변학원이었던 험블한 이 공간이 눈에 띄어 이곳에 자리 잡게 되었습니다. 명동이어야 한다는 특별한 이유는 없었습니다.

러프하고 인더스트리얼한 공간처럼 느껴져요. 처음 공간을 기획할 때 버려진 스튜디오라는 컨셉을 잡았습니다. 폐허가 된 공간에 음향 시스템에선 음악이 나오면서 자유롭게 식물들이 자란다는 상상을 했습니다. 모티브는 디스토피아 영화들에서 표현된 공간들입니다. 이 곳에선 나혼자 있지만 안전하게 느껴지는 공간이 핵심입니다.

식물을 단순한 인테리어로 활용한 것이 아니군요. 이전에 이야기 했듯이 버려진 스튜디오에서 잡초들과 식물들이 자라난다는 컨셉이어서 식물들은 필수 적이었습니다. 제가 식물들을 좋아하기도 하고 공간을 만든다면 식물과 함께 지내야 겠다는 생각을 가지고 있었습니다. 아마도 와주시는 손님들도 도심에서 식물들과 호흡하고자하는 바램 때문에 방문해 주시는 것 같습니다.

DJ Baxa의 흔적. 아마 이공간이 저와 동일시 된다고 많은 분들이 이야기 해주셨는데 저도 그런것 같습니다. 나이가 들면서 조금더 코지하고 칠한 분위기를 가져가려고 하는데 이 공간도 그런 연장선상에 위치한다고 생각됩니다.

커다란 Tannoy 스피커가 눈에 띕니다. 여러 레코드바나 리스닝바에서 설치한 JBL 이나 Altec 스피커를 이용하기는 좀 싫었습니다. 그래서 많은 스피커를 알아보던중에 제가 사랑하는 엔지니어 Al Schmidt가 사용하던 시스템을 사용하고 싶었고 Tannoy Monitor System 을 발견 하게 되었습니다. 이 스피커가 그 시대의 음악들을 잘 표현해 준다는 의견을 듣고 오랜기간 찾아 헤매던 중에 구하게 되었습니다. 컨셉이 스튜디오 이다보니 스피커, 앰프, 컴프레서 등의 장비를 스튜디오 장비로 가져다 놓았습니다. Hi-Fi 시스템에선 많이 사용되지는 않는 장비로 채워놔서 약간은 다른 리스닝바와는 다른 늬앙스를 느끼실 수 있을 겁니다.

보여주기식 세팅은 아닌 것 같군요. 스피커의 위치를 보면 자리에 앉아있을 때 딱 귀 높이, 그리고 공간의 안쪽으로 약간 틸트되어 있어요. 스피커 포지셔닝의 중요성을 아는사람이라면 의도된 세팅이라는 것을 단번에 알 수 있죠. 물론 알아주는 손님은 아직 많지 않지만…

주로 어떤 손님들이 찾아오나요? 제가 심한 I 성향이다보니 손님들의 데이터를 적극적으로 쌓고 있지는 않는데 주로 젊고 음악을 사랑하시는 분들이 오시는 것 같습니다. 이건 그냥 제 느낌입니다.

공간에서 추구하는 음악은 어떤 것들인가요? 편안한 분위기를 만들 수 있는 모든 음악들을 추구합니다. Brazil music, Balearic, AOR, Indonesian Jazz, Disco, House 등이 나올 수 있도록 하고 있습니다.

DJ SET. 토요일 저녁에 디제이 세션이 있습니다 주로 이 공간에 애정이 있는 분들 위주로 음악은 House에서 부터 Reggae까지 이 곳과 어울리는 음악들이라면 모두 환영입니다.

이벤트가 있는 것 같기도 해요. 작년에는 주변 좋은 곳들과 협업으로 몇몇 행사를 진행했습니다. 요즘은 특별히 이벤트를 지금은 잡고 있지 않고 있고 오브옉트를 조금더 브랜딩 하고 있는 중입니다만 올해도 후로아, 슈퍼소울과 함께 협업을 계속 진행하며 명동에서 좋은 놀거리를 제공하려고 생각중입니다.

Bar이니 만큼 시그니처 음료도 있을까요? 오브옉트 에이드(Objktt Ade) 와 위아그린(We are Greeen: 청포도송이 세개가 들어가서 e가 세개 입니다.)이라는 시그니처 칵테일이 있습니다. 다른 곳에는 없는 칵테일이라 생소하실 수도 있는데 즐기셨던 많은 분들이 좋은 평가를 해주셔서 오브옉트의 시그니처로 자리매김하고 있습니다.

Why Myeong-dong? Objktt started as something akin to a design studio. The goal was to find a high-floor space away from heavy foot traffic, and this humble, former speech academy caught my eye. There wasn’t a particular reason why it had to be in Myeong-dong.

The Aesthetic: A Studio Left to Decay From the start, I envisioned an abandoned studio—a space where music plays through a high-fidelity system while nature slowly takes over. The inspiration came from dystopian films, where solitude and safety coexist in a beautifully ruined setting.

Plants as More Than Just Decor The presence of plants was never just an aesthetic choice. I always imagined a space where wild greenery thrived, much like in a forgotten studio reclaimed by nature. I personally love plants, and when designing this space, I knew they had to be part of it. Many visitors, I believe, come here seeking that rare connection between urban life and nature.

A Reflection of DJ Baxa’s Sensibilities People often say this space feels like an extension of me, and I’d have to agree. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate cozy, laid-back atmospheres, and Objktt embodies that shift.

The Sound System: A Studio Approach Instead of the usual JBL or Altec speakers found in many listening bars, I wanted something different. After much searching, I came across the Tannoy monitor system, famously used by Al Schmitt, an engineer I deeply admire. These speakers bring out the best in music from their era. Staying true to the studio concept, the sound setup includes studio-grade speakers, amplifiers, and compressors—equipment rarely seen in Hi-Fi listening bars, giving Objktt a distinct sonic character.

Speaker Positioning: A Thoughtful Setup If you pay attention, you’ll notice that the speakers are tilted inward and positioned at ear level when seated—an intentional setup that true audiophiles will recognize. Not everyone notices, but for those who do, it’s a rewarding detail.

The Crowd: Who Comes to Objktt? I tend to keep a low profile and don’t actively collect visitor data, but I get the sense that young music lovers frequent the space. It’s just my intuition, though.

The Music: A Blend of Comfort and Discovery The goal is to create an atmosphere of easy-listening sophistication. Expect a mix of Brazilian music, Balearic sounds, AOR, Indonesian jazz, disco, and house—whatever fits the mood.

DJ Sessions: Saturday Nights at Objktt Every Saturday evening, we host DJ sets. Those with a deep connection to the space curate the music, ranging from house and reggae to anything that feels right for the atmosphere.

Events and Collaborations Last year, we collaborated with some great venues for special events. While we’re currently focusing on refining Objktt’s brand, we’re planning more collaborations with Floor and SuperSoul this year to bring unique experiences to Myeong-dong.

Signature Cocktails As a bar, Objktt has its own signature drinks:

These cocktails aren’t found anywhere else, and while they may be unfamiliar at first, they’ve been well-received by those who have tried them, solidifying their place as Objktt’s signature drinks.
