Please introduce yourself. Hello, I’m Seop. I’ve been a longtime listener of this channel for over a decade, so being invited here feels especially meaningful. Thank you for having me. You play in Seoul as well, but your base is Gwangju, right? That’s right. I originally came to Gwangju because of my father’s business when I was young, and I’ve been living there ever since. What does your work in Gwangju look like? I used to play mainly at Bonobo, the space I used to run. These days, I occasionally play at a sound bar operated by friends. And how about your activities in Seoul? In Seoul, I mainly play at Hills & Europa, which is run by DJ Junmo. Since most music-related events are concentrated in Seoul, it must be challenging to stay active in the provinces. How is it for you? There are occasional fun events, but the reality is that the population outside Seoul continues to decline. So the supply isn’t large, but the demand isn’t strong either. It definitely makes things more challenging. Are there any venues in Gwangju you’d consider must-visits? If I had to choose, I’d say Sidewinder and Auricle. Both are small sound bars, but each has a clear identity. Sidewinder has one of the most impressive sound systems I’ve encountered—even compared to places around the world. Auricle is a freer, more playful space. Both host guest DJs on a regular basis. Could you share a recent night that really stuck with you? A party called Land of Light comes to mind. It started with a simple conversation with a close friend, and though it was a small event, amazing teams and incredible DJs generously joined in. The weather was brutally hot and humid—we were sweating nonstop—but the sound, the space, and the people all came together perfectly. Above all, everyone who came that night looked genuinely happy, and that meant a lot. You seem to have a strong interest in sound systems. I do. That interest really began with Bonobo, the space I used to run. When I opened it at 28, I brought in an Altec A7 I purchased from Ffan, and that was the start of my obsession with the warmth of analog sound. What do you focus on most when you DJ? I’m not the type to prepare a perfectly fixed playlist. I like to see the venue beforehand, imagine the different moods that suit the space, and move from there. I enjoy making spontaneous, unexpected choices depending on the situation. How did you first get into DJing? Since I was young, I loved finding music my friends didn’t know and sharing it with them. When they reacted positively, I felt a rush—that excitement is what led me toward DJing. What style of music do you gravitate toward? I don’t cling to a specific genre. If the sound has the texture I love, I enjoy it regardless of category. Tell us about your digging and playlist-building process. For classic vinyl, I mostly use Discogs. For new releases, I shop through Juno. For digital downloads, I use a wide range of platforms. And whenever I travel abroad, visiting local record shops is a must. I build a new playlist each time, tailored to the venue I’m playing. If you could listen to only one track—or one album—before you die, what would it be? Software – Island Sunrise. What are your plans moving forward? I’m preparing to open a small but striking club in the provinces—a place that can introduce great domestic and international artists. I also plan to gradually expand my activities in Seoul. Thanks for your time today. It was great meeting you!

But since weekends leaned heavily toward dance music, I felt the limits of the Altec setup. I wanted a custom build that delivered both the warmth of analog and the power needed for dance floors. I reached out to Iwan Arjanto, a hi-fi specialist in Indonesia, and decided to combine Altec and JBL components. I even traveled all over Korea—from Paju to Busan—to track down the parts.
Looking back, I probably took the long way around. But ultimately, I wanted the music—my own and every other DJ’s—to reach people in the best possible sound. I didn’t want Bonobo to be a place consumed for drinks and social media; I wanted it to be a space where music truly led. That’s why I became so fixated on the sound system.
