GOLMOKGIL Mixtape #50 – Graye

안녕하세요! 이렇게 다시 만나게 될 줄이야! 캐주얼하게 장소에 대한 이야기로 시작해볼까 해요. 우리가 지금 있는 한남동이 혹시 어떤 의미가 있나요?
정말 반가워요! 재밌네요. [하하] 저는 요 근처에 살아요! 사실 군산에서 올라왔죠. 이제 3개월정도 됬어요. 그래서인지는 몰라도 아직 딱히 의미는 없어요. 아직 동네를 둘러 보고 있는 중인데. 강남, 이태원, 홍대와 모두 가까워서 움직이기 편하다고 느끼고 있어요.

지금 우리가 대화나누고 있는 이곳 근처에 현대카드 뮤직 라이브러리가 있어요. 최근 오픈했죠. 혹시 가보셨나요?
당연히 가봤죠. 잘은 모르지만 Soulscape형과 Stuf형이 디렉팅에 참여하고 있는걸로 알고있어요. 간혹 사람들에게 ‘허세를 위한 공간이다.’ 라고 하지만 저는 긍정, 부정의 생각없이 현대카드 측에서 계속해서 대중들에게 문화적인 면을 어필하고 있는 중인 것 같다고 생각해요.

여태까지 어떤 음악들과 가깝게 지냈나요?
어릴 적엔 힙합음악을 좋아했어요. 90년대생인 우리나이 또래들에겐 하우스나 테크노보다 힙합이 익숙한 음악이었죠. 그 이후 상당히 실험적이고 추상적인 음악들을 좋아하게 되었어요. 흔히 ‘비트뮤직’이라 불리는 것들이었죠. 이 때쯤, 영기획을 통해 제 첫 앨범 . ‘Mon EP’ 을 발매 할 수 있었어요. 제 첫 앨범이기도 하고, 영기획의 첫 앨범이기도 했죠. 그 이후로도 한동안 UK 베이스 음악들을 좋아했어요. 그러다 최근엔 하우스와 테크노 음악들을 듣고 있어요.

하우스나 테크노를 좋아하게된 계기가 있는거에요?
사실 쇼킹한 계기가 있던건 아니에요. 또 엄밀히 말하자면 꾸준히 관심을 갖기는 했어요. 비트뮤직을 주로 다루던 시기에도, 하우스를 좋아했죠. 프로듀싱 측면에선 요즘엔 비트뮤직보다 좀 더 댄서블하다고 볼 수 있는 하우스 기반의 음악을 만들고 싶단 생각이 강해요. (물론 여전히 힙합과 비트뮤직을 즐겨듣고 좋아해요.)

그럼 요즘 음악생활은 어떤가요?
일단 저는 디제이 이전에 GRAYE라는 이름을 건 솔로 프로젝트와 보컬 Fuckushi Oyo 누나, ‘꿈에카메라를가져올걸’ 이라는 밴드와 밴드 ‘해일’의 기타리스트 미장형과 함께 75A라는 밴드로 활동중이에요. 디제잉을 하는건 솔로프로젝트에 일부인거죠. 처음엔 케익숍에서 라이브를 많이 했었는데, 스타일이 바뀌면서 피스틸을 비롯해 좀 더 다양한 베뉴에서 틀려고 노력하고 있어요. 다행히도 여러 곳에서 불러주니 고마울 뿐이에요.

그렇다면 요즘 누구와 음악적 공유를 많이 하고 있어요?
다양한 편이라고 생각하지만… 현대무용가 차진엽씨와 요즘 교류가 많아요. 댄싱9이란 프로그램에서 미모의 심사위원으로 화제가 되기도 했었죠. 무용가이지만 안무가 이기도 하셔서 음악적인 스펙트럼이 상당히 넓으신 편이에요. Andy Stott도 즐겨들으시고 XXYYXX 같은 제 또래의 어린 친구들 음악도 꼬박꼬박 챙겨들으시니까. 덕분에 항상 좋은 영감을 얻어요.

그 밖에는 idiotape의 디구루형과 Mystik의 Magico형, Boostknob의 사운드 엔지니어 박경선형 이 세 분은 다 제가 하우스와 테크노 음악에도  관심을 갖을 수 있도록 도와준 분들이에요. 그리고 언제나 힘을 주시는 Soulscape, Damirat 형도. 모두 한국에서 최전선에 위치한 사람들이라고 생각해요.

역시나 베드룸 디제이에서 라이브 디제이로 넘어가는 시기가 있었죠?
우연치 앨범을 내기 전, 무대륙이라는 곳에서 Watmm이라는 기획 공연에 참여할 수 있었어요. 당시에 좋은 반응이 있었고, 덕분에 영기획에서 앨범도 내고 케익숍에서도 음악을 틀 수 있게 되었죠. 우리가 흔히 ‘클럽’이라고 부르는 곳을 기준으로 한다면 케익숍이 될거에요. 워낙 멋지고 핫한 곳이었으니까 언젠간 틀고 싶다고 생각중이었는데 딱 연락이 와서 너무 기분이 좋았죠. 거의 2년 전의 이야기에요.

올해의 베스트 앨범을 꼽자면요?
‘Tame Impala – Currents’를 꼽겠어요. 그 앨범 중 가장 좋아하는 곳은 ‘Cause I’m A Man’이죠. 제가 페이스북에 공유한 적도 있는데. 모두가 좋아할 음반이라고 생각해요.

그러면 좋아하는 곡들 좀더 꼽아볼 수 있어요?
사람들은 제가 어려운 음악만 들을거라고 생각하는데. 그런 음악만 듣진 않아요. 순위를 매겨서 꼽기에는 너무 아쉽고, 그냥 좀 다른식으로  좋아하는 것 뿐이죠. 지금 생각나는 곡 몇 개 적을게요.

10개의 트랙이라니! 충분해요. 혹시 앨범 아트웍을 신경쓰는 편인가요? 가령, Vinyl을 살 때는 아트웍을 보는 재미가 쏠쏠하거든요.
그건 디지털 앨범이라고해서 달라지지 않는 것 같아요. 인터넷에서 음원을 산다고해서 아트웍을 신경쓰지 않는건 아니라고 생각해요. 다만, 예전처럼 음반점에서 어떤 음악가인지 모르는채로 아트웍만 보고 골라 듣던 재미를 인터넷에서는 좀 처럼 느낄 수 없겠죠.

그렇다면 Analog vs Digital은 논쟁의 여지가 없는걸까요?
굳이 비유를 하자면 시계랑 비슷한 것 같기도해요. 클래식한 초침시계를 좋아하는 사람도 있고, 다양한 기능이 있는 디지털 시계를 좋아하는 사람도 있잖아요. 이와 마찬가지로 아날로그와 디지털이라는 것도 결국 본인이 편한걸 쓰면 된다고 생각해요. 바이널로 듣는걸 즐기지만, CDJ와 USB의 결합이 편하다면 이를 따라도 좋고요. 그리고 베뉴에 따라서도 달라질 수 있어요. 각 베뉴마다 지니고 있는 스타일이 있잖아요. 가령 골목&바이닐 펍에선 바이닐을 틀어야 재밌는거고.

디제이는 반드시 프로듀싱을 해야하는 걸까요?
일단 음악에 접근하기 너무 쉬워진 세상이에요. 적어도 그 툴에 있어선 말이죠. 악보를 볼 줄 몰라도 괜찮아진 세상이 되었으니까요. 그래서 그런지 마치 음악을 만드는 일을 기본처럼 여기는 경향이 있는것 같아요. 전 반대로 그렇지 않다고 생각하거든요. 모두 각자의 재능을 갖고있는 것이고, 디제이라면 본인의 라이브러리 구축에 좀 더 투자하는게 멋있어보여요. 특히나 요즘 같은 때에는…

혹시 씬에 대해 자유롭게 언급하고 싶은 부분이 있어요?
세대교체가 재빨리 이루어졌으면 좋겠어요. 제 또래(20대 중반)혹은 더 어린 친구들에게도 조금씩 기회가 더 열렸으면 좋겠고. 그건 엄청 오래하신 형들도 마찬가지 일거에요. 저 또한 같이 치열하게 경쟁하고 싶고, 다만 아쉬는 부분이 있다면 인터넷이 급속도로 발전하고 나서부터 제 또래 혹은 더 어린친구들이 인터넷에서만 정보를 얻고 그 바운더리안에서만 노는게 아쉬워요.

혹시 이번기회에 언급하고싶은 젊은 친구들이 있다면요?
이 인터뷰로 언급하고 싶은 친구들이 있다면 아티스트로서 자기 작업을 하며 디자이너로 활동하고 있는 Sol lee라는 친구와 Dipcoin과 rm360 소속의 디제이이자 프로듀서 Maalib, 그리고 랩퍼 중에선 PNSB가 가장 눈에 띄는것 같아요. 언제나 응원하고 있어요.

파티를 기획할 계획은 없나요?
앞으로는 제 이름을 걸고 하고싶어요. 모든 디제이들이 굳이 크루에 얽매일 필요는 없다고 봐요. 이제 한국 아티스트들도 각자 자기이름 걸 정도의 실력이 된다고 생각하고 그럴 수 있는 적절한 시기가 왔다고 생각해요. 디제이라면 스킬도 당연히 중요하지만 그 디제이만의 Tasty와 감(?)을 어필하는 것도 중요하다고 생각해요.

혹시 독자들에게 클럽들을 추천해줄 수 있나요?
Cakeshop은 워낙 유명하니까…. 전 오히려 클럽이 아닌 카페나 펍에서 열리는 파티에 가보라고 권하고 싶어요. 신도시(seendosi)나, 학쌀롱 같은… 클럽음악 뿐만 아니라 정말 다양한 음악을 들을 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될거에요. 클럽이라면 굳이 클럽이어야 한다면 Mystik과 Vurt, Pistil을 추천해요. 사실 저같은 20대들은 하우스, 테크노 음악을 많이 듣고 자랐다고 할 수 없기 때문에, 이 또한 재밌는 경험이 될거에요.

이 질문이 좀 늦게나온 것 같아요. 이번 믹스테잎을 조금 설명해줄 수 있나요?
믹스 제목은 [Lucky Gram]이에요. 평소에 제가 좋아하는 길이가 긴 음악들을 선곡했고. 그동안의 믹스셋과는 달리, 급하지 않고 여유있는 셋을 보여주고 싶었어요.

혹시 골목길의 다음 아티스트를 추천해줄 수 있나요?
Magico(Mystik), Youngmond(GQ editor), 하세가와 요헤이(양평이형, 뜨거운감자, 장기하와 얼굴들). 그동안은 너무 클럽 음악들을 위주로 소개된 것 같아 좀 아쉬웠는데. Youngmond와 하세가와 료헤이씨. 인터뷰가 가능하다면, 골목길의 다양성에 좀더 도움이 될거 같아요.

How do you feel about this area, Hannam-dong, where we are sitting now. What does this neighbourhood mean to you at the moment?
Nice to meet you again! [haha] I’m living near here at the moment. I’m not from Seoul but Gunsan, which is a small city and it’s been only 3 months, so… I cannot really understand this place just yet. I’m just hanging around nowadays. Anyways, it’s a middle point between Hongdae and Gangnam, so its been very convenient to get around.

Have you heard about or visited the Music Library set up by Hyundai Card? Its close to here, in this area.
Yeah for sure, I heard that DJ Soulscape and Stuf had participated in directing the space and curating. Some say that people just visit there for selfish reasons, like “I don’t know any of this stuff, but I’ll go anyway, I’m doing something special”. Whatever people say, the point is that the largest company in Korea keeps pushing something musical and classical to the public.

What kind of music do you prefer?
It was hip-hop when I was younger. Our age group would be more familiar with hip-hop music, rather than house and techno. Then, I tried to make some more experimental music called beat music. My first album is ‘Mon EP’ put out through Young Gifted&Wack. It’s their first release, too. I loved UK bass music for quite a while, and currently have been more into house and techno.

What brought you close to more of a house and techno sound?
That didn’t happen accidentally. I preferred it for a long time, even when I played more beat music. I want to produce more danceable music rather than beat music now, so house would be appropriate! (I still love hip-hop and beat music though!).

So… how is your music life these days?
Basically, I’m a band musician. I’ve been doing my solo project ‘GRAYE’ and as a member of 75A playing with Fuckushi(vocal) and Mi-jang(guitarist from ‘꿈에 카메라를 가져올걸 ‘Hail’. DJing is just a part of this life. I’ve usually played at Cakeshop, but now I’m trying to play more venues, places like Pistil. I just appreciate those people giving me chances.

Who are you collaborating with these days?
There are so many, Jin-yeop Cha, a modern dancer. She appeared on a TV show, ‘Dancing 9’ as a beautiful judge. She is a directing as well, so she has a good sense for the music. As far as I know, she enjoys young music like Andy Stott and XXYYXX. I got lots of help from her.

Also DGURU(IDIOTAPE), Magico(Mystik) and Gyoung-sun Park, a sound engineer(Boostknob). They actually introduced me to house and techno. Also Soulscape(360sounds) and Damirat. They are the pioneers.

Can you touch on the time you moved into a live set up, no longer in your bedroom?
Fortunately, I participated in Watmm right before releasing my album. I think people loved my set, so then I could make my first album and get it out through Young Gifted&Wack, and then get a chance to play at Cakeshop. This was my first live set at a club. I knew this is a kind of hot spot, so it was great honour for me. It’s been 2 years now…

Can you pick the best album of this year?
I would have to say ‘Tame Impala – Currents’ and my favourite record is the song ‘Cause I’m A Man’. I shared it on my Facebook so I hope you’ll like it!

And while we’re on the subject, could you tell us a few of your other favourite tracks?
People around me usually think I only enjoy experimental music, but that’s not true actually. It’s hard to determine the ranking, but each of the songs contain different feelings … Anyways, if I tried…

Are you interested in album artwork? Interesting vinyl sleeves that would attract people to pick them up?
It’s the same for digital music. People really care about the artwork when shopping online as well. I know what you are saying though… random picking with only checking out the artwork would rarely happen.

Where do you stand on the analog vs digital debate?
It’s similar with wristwatches. Some people wear classic styles with the hour, minute and second hand, but others just love digital for its function and convenience. It’s okay to just pick which one suits you. Playing with vinyl, or playing on CDJ’s with a USB, it’s all-good either way. It could depend on the venue too because each one has their own style and history. For example ‘Golmok&Vinly pub’ would play and show different vinyl records to their customers.

Should DJ’s want to be producers?
It’s very easy for people to experience the tools of both in a minimal form. It could start with reading music for example. So people produce musically whether they want or not. However, I think in a different way each musician has their originality and taste, so they should focus more at building their own library of music.

What are your thoughts on the ‘underground’ scene?
I’m hoping for more of a generational shift. I hope the youth will be provided with more chances. I think older people would agree with this too. I also want to be in competition with many people. The one downside is that those young guys are just staying online. They should go out into the field and face to music head on.

Who are some of the younger generation you recommend checking out?
Sol Lee (artist and designer), Dipcoin, Maalib (rm360) and the rapper PNSB, cheers! 

Are you interested in organizing a party right now or in the future?    
I would like to make it using my name. Not all DJs need to be so reliant on others or their crew. I’m sure that many DJs in the scene came make an event with themselves being the focus and curate towards their own tastes and mood.

Which is your favourite venue/club?
Cakeshop… but it’s so popular now! I would also recommend you to visit the parties at cafes and pubs like Seendosi and 학쌀롱. You will be pleased with the various music and styles. As for the clubs… Mystik and Pistil. The younger generation haven’t really experienced good house and techno music, so those clubs will give you an array of selections leaning towards house and techno.

What can we expect from your Golmokgil mixtape?
Its title is [Lucky Gram]. I chose some of my favourite tracks that are each quite long; I want you to enjoy it slowly and smoothly.

Could you recommend some artists for our readers?
Magico(Mystik), Youngmond (GQ editor) and Hasegawa Yohei a.k.a 양평이형 for Koreans (뜨거운감자, 장기하와얼굴들). The older golmokgil guests have all been, or are, club DJs. So I wanted to provide some different artists. They would all provide a nice variety!
