안녕하세요 Ligrye씨. 그 동안 잘 지내셨나요! 일요일인데, 어제 파티 이후 숙취는 없으신가요?
인터뷰는 너무 어려워요… 이 녹취록을 제가 들을 필요는 없는거죠?

그럼요. 소식통에 따르면 요즘 Ligrye씨는 서울에서 가장 바쁘게 활동하는 아티스트 중 한명 인 것 같아요. 많은 곳들에서 플레이를 하셨죠?
여름이 시작 되서 그런 것 아닐까요. 겨울에는 이정도로 바쁘지 않았어요. 최근 들어 음악을 틀 수 있는 파티들이 많아지긴 헀지만, 사람들을 집 밖으로 나오게 하기가 쉽지만은 않네요 또. 그래도 봄이 오고 여름이 시작되면 사람들이 하나 둘씩 밖으로 나오니까 좋아요. 일요일이든 금요일이든 파티를 열 수 있잖아요! 물론, 컨셉이 좋다면 말이에요.

일요일에 열릴 파티에 대한 소식도 몇일 전에 들었어요. 어떤 행사인가요?
Summer Sundays라는 파티에요. 작년에 이태원에서 성공적인 시작을 했죠. 좋은 음악과 BBQ를 주제로 해서 햄버거랑 허머스 플래터도 같이 곁들인 메뉴들을 선보였어요. 일요일 오후와 잘 맞는 분위기의 파티에요. 작년에는 안타깝게도 여름동안 3번밖에 파티를 진행하지 못했어요. 경찰이랑 파티 장소 주인이 소음문제로 많은 곤란을 겪어서 파티를 계속 할 수 가 없었거든요… 서울에는 아름다운 옥상 공간들이 많지만, 또 한편으로는 인구밀도가 높아서 소음문제 신고가 잦은 편이에요. 그래서 야외 파티를 할 때는 항상 소음과 장소 문제를 신경써야하죠.

남아프리카인인 Ligrye에게는 처음에 조금 이해하기 어려운 부분일 수 도 있었겠네요. 남아프리카에서는 많은 루프탑 파티가 열리지 않았나요?
맞아요. Summer Sundays의 처음 아이디어도 제가 남아프리카에서 했던 파티들에서 착안한 것들이에요. 남아프리카에는 Cold Turkey 라고 불리는 라운지 같은 넓은 공간이 있는데, 정말로 그냥 창문과 문만 있고 안은 비어있는 집이라고 생각하시면 되요. 사람들은 주말에 그곳에 가서 맥주도 마시고 음악에 맞춰 춤도 추곤 해요. 집 밖의 마당에서 놀 수 도 있고, 또 어른 아이 할 것 없이 모두가 같이 즐길 수 있어서 제가 굉장히 좋아하는 문화 중 하나였어요.
Submerge Sundays라는 이벤트도 굉장히 잘 알려져 있는 문화 중 하나에요. Submerge Sundays는 파티 배경을 바다로 하고 있어요. 파티 피플들 뒤로 배들이 떠있고, 야자수랑 바다를 풍경으로 라이브 밴드나 디제이들이 음악을 틀어요. 여지껏 제가 가본 파티들 중에 가장 완벽했던 밤들 중 몇몇은 일요일이었어요. 하지만 서울은 안타깝게도 바다가 가까이 없으니, 루프탑이 최선의 선택이되겠네요.

그런 아름다운 곳을 뒤로 하고 한국에 오시게 된 이유는 무엇 이었나요?
제 전공 분야는 ‘경제학’이랑 ‘조직심리학’이에요. 졸업을 하자마자 친구 중 한명이 제게 ‘한국으로 와. 이곳은 정말 최고야! 너도 여기를 사랑하게 될거야.’ 라고 제안했어요. 처음에는 거절했는데, 결국에는 설득 당해서 안정된 직장의 기회를 버리고 한국에 왔고 그 친구가 모든 것을 도와줬죠.

현재도 서울 생활에 만족 하시나요?
네. 너무 재밌어요! 처음에 1년은 좀 힘들기도 했어요. 서울에서 3시간이나 떨어진 곳에 살았고, 저희 마을에 외국인이라고는 저 하나 뿐 이었거든요. 전 지금 한국의 빠르게 변하는 특징이 좋아요. 뭔가 새로운 것을 시작해 보기에는 완벽한 도시라고 생각해요. 서울의 유행은 굉장히 빠르게 변하고 있어요. 만약 당신이 조금이라도 외향적인 측면이 있고 하고 싶은 것이 있다면 한국이 좋은 시작점이 될 수 있을 거에요. 하지만 한국어를 익히는 것은 꼭 필요하다고 말해주고 싶네요! 저도 아직 완벽하지 않아 많은 제약이 있지만, 그 점 빼고는 만족하며 지내고 있습니다.

Dj로써의 커리어 보다 포토그래퍼 로써 더 오랜 기간 활동하신 것으로 알고 있어요.
저는 파티와 음악, 사진과 같은 문화 생활들을 즐겨요. 하지만 남아프리카는 이런 것들을 즐기기에는 조금 한계점들이 있었어요. 서울은 그런 의미에서 저에게 새로운 창조적 공간들을 열어주었어요. 제가 사진을 전문적으로 찍겠다라고 생각하면서 하고 있는 것은 아니에요. 저는 그냥 사진 찍는 것을 즐기고, 그 결과물들을 볼 때면 뿌듯함을 느껴요. 꼭 이 작업물들이 절 유명하게 만들어줄 필요는 없어요. 그냥 이 일을 하고 있을 때 행복하니까 하는 거에요.

당신이 Susan Sontag의 ‘사람들을 찍는 것은 무례하다’라는 말을 인용하는 것을 보고 포토그래퍼라고 생각했어요. 사실 난 그말에 상당히 동의하거든요. 다른 사람이 저를 찍을 때 좀 불편해요. 왜 그 문구를 골랐어요?

글쎄요. 그냥 남아공과 매우 다른 이곳이 맘에 들어요. 일단 엄청나게 안전하죠. 길에서 술을 마시거나, 원하는 곳 어디든 걸을 수 있죠. 이건 나에게 매우 낯선 모습이기도 해요. 그래서 이 모든 걸 담고 싶었던 거죠. 그리고 때론 다른 사람에게 무례할 수 있는 사진을 찍게되기도 해요. 왜냐면, 그 사람들에게 난 외국인일 뿐이고, 그들에게 내가 양해를 구하지도 않았거든요. 가끔 그러긴 하지만, 그러고나면 포커스를 좀 놓치는 경우도 생기죠. 특히나 필름카메라는 특별해요. 되도록 그 순간을 충실히 담으려하죠. 의도되는 건 거의 없어요. 그냥 갑자기 기억이 난건데, 어떤 독일 인디 밴드가 사진은 순간의 감정이나 사랑 같은 걸 담아낼 수 없다는 노래를 불렀어요. 당신은 그렇게 생각지 않길 바래요….

왜냐면 사진은 어떤 순간을 담고, 그것이 그때의 느낌들을 고스란히 떠올리게 하거든요. 가령 우리 집에있는 사진을 한 예로 들어볼까요. 내가 태국에 있을 때였는데, 해가 지는 시간에 사원으로 가는 기차에 타고있었어요. 날씨가 매우 습하고 끈적끈적 했죠. 에어컨도 없고, 매우 더웠어요. 그 순간에 어떤 외국인이 헤드폰을 낀 채로 창문쪽에 머리를 기대고 있었어요.사람들은 서있고, 다들 퇴근해서 집에 가는 순간이었죠. 해가 지는 시기에 매우 적절한 빛이 들어오고 있었죠. 그래서 셔터를 눌렀죠. 아무 보정도 하지 않았어요. 이제와서 이 사진을 보면.. 정말 그 때로 되돌아가는 기분이에요. 그 기분, 그 분위기, 햇빛 그대로 말이죠.
내가 Susan의 그 문장을 좋아하는건 음.. 비판적인 시각에서죠. 누군가를 언짢게 한다면 그건 좋지 않은 일이에요. 다만, 꼭 그러고 싶다면, 충분한 열정과 애정이 필요하다는 거에요. 그리고 분명히 조심해야한다는 점도요. 나 역시 그렇고요. 누군가 부정적인 반응을 보일까 항상 염려한답니다.

하하. 사진 얘기에 상당히 깊이 들어간 것 같아요.. 어쨌든 당신은 조용히 아무도 모르게 찍으려 한다는 거군요?
맞아요. 되도록 조용히 처리하려하죠. 시간이 많다고 느끼는 순간에도 말이에요. 또 있는 그대로를 유지하려고 해요. 설사 당신이 실수하는 순간이 오고, 처음엔 대단해 보이지 않을 수도 있어요. 그런데 확실한건 그것들이 결국은 특별해진다는 거에요. 그냥 난 계속 이 일을 할거고, 아마 즐겁게 할 수 있을 거에요.

어쩌면, 그렇게 아무도 모르게 한다는게 DJ와는 상당히 다른 모습이긴 해요. 특히나 한국에서처럼 모두가 DJ를 바라보는 곳에서는요. 걔다가, 당신은 상당히 독특해요. 항상 관객들과 즐기는 모습을 보이기도 하고요.
하하 그럴 여유가 있기도 하지요. 얼마전 밤에도 그랬고요. 그런데 보통 그렇지 않나요? 자신이 춤출 수 없다면, 어느 누구도 춤추지 않을거에요. 항상 내 셋을 바라보고 스스로 질문해요. ‘내 스타일의 비트가 살아있는가? 리듬을 제대로 만들어가고 있는가?’ 만약 그렇지 못하다면 그걸 트랙리스트에서 제거해야죠.
난 스스로를 대단한 DJ라고 생각지 않아요. 그냥 사람들이 움직이고, 춤추고, 웃는 모습들이 좋을 뿐이죠. 그게 내가 사진을 찍게되는 이유이기도 하고요. 그 자연스러움을 담는거에요. 가끔 그들이 그걸 눈치채죠. ‘와우, 완전히 무례한 일을 겪었군. 다시해줘. 조금 더 찍어줘…’ [하하]

남아공에서도 플레이를 했어요?
하우스 파티에서 음악을 틀곤 했지만, 사실 디제잉을 한건 아니에요. 나보다 9살 많은 형이 있는데, 형 역시 음악 매우 좋아하죠. 음악에 관해선 형한테서 영향을 많이 받았어요. 형 없이는 80년대 후반, 90년대 클래식한 음악들을 접할 수 없었겠죠. 대부분 내가 트는 오래된 음악들은 그에게 영향을 받은 거죠. 그는 클럽씬을 꽤 많이 즐겼어요. 하우스 파티도 함께 했었죠. 15살 때가 처음이었던 것 같은데, 정말 미칠정도로 놀았어요.

이곳과는 정말 다르네요. 한국에는 홈파티를 여는 경우가 거의 없거든요.
맞아요. 거실을 댄스 플로어로 만들기 위해 모든 가구들을 빼버리곤 했죠. 커다란 마당이 있었고, BBQ도 만들었어요. 남아공에선 braai라고 불러요. 남아공 버전의 BBQ죠. 분명 더 낫지만요! 매년 우린 두번의 파티를 열곤 했어요. 멈출 수 없을 정도로 즐거웠죠.

혹시 믹스테잎에 남아공 음악들도 담았나요?
사실 꽤 많은 부담을 느꼈어요. 어쨌든 아프리칸 사운드의 영향을 받은 트랙들을 담았어요. 난 항상 트라이벌하거나 남미의 사운드들을 담으려고 고민해요. 사람들이 정말 좋아할만한 거죠. 그런데 이게 꼭 내가 남아공 출신이기 때문에 그러는 건 아니에요. 그 음악들은 정말 흥겹고 다른 사람들을 춤추게 만들기 충분하기 때문이에요.
내 음악적 배경이 그래요. 당신이 나한테 이 DJ는 어떻고, 이 Producer는 어떻고 물을 수도 있어요. 그리고 난 아마 대답을 제대로 못할 수도 있죠. 하지만 어쨌든 그 음악들은 나를 움직이게 만들기에 충분해요. 다양한 소스들을 찾으려고 노력중이고, 그게 내 셋과 잘 어울리는지를 이해하려고 하죠.

당신의 형말고 영향을 받은 아티스트나, 밴드, 음악, 앨범 등이 있을까요?
음악이요? 가장 좋아하는건 정말 오래된 곡이에요. Robin S – Show me love란 곡이죠. 만약 기회가 있다면, 이 곡을 꼭 틀어보고 싶어요. 정말 클래식 하기 때문에요. 그 곡을 만약 내가 예전에 하던 홈파티에서 틀었다면, 사람들이 정말 미치도록 좋아할 거에요. 물론 여기서도 마찬가지고요. 이 곡을 틀었을 때 사람들이 따라부르고 하는게 너무 좋아요. 정말 재밌잖아요! 특히 사람들이 쭈뼛쭈뼛 거릴 때 말이죠. 분위기를 한번 전환시켜주는거죠!

완전히 새로운 곡들도 있나요?
두 곡이 있어요. Julio Bashmore – KONG인데, 최근에 알게된 프로듀서 듀오죠. 이름은 Victoria Kim이에요. 클래식한 K-pop을 매시업 하기도 했더군요. 무도회장에 나올법한 사운드들이 들어있어요. 그리고 몇 주 전에 케익숍에서 DJ Sliink와 함께 했던 밤이 기억나요. 댄스 플로어를 떠날 수가 없더군요. 춤을 멈출 수도 없었어요. 심지어 담배피러 잠시 자리를 비우기도 싫을 정도더라구요. 얼마나 좋았는지 이해가 가죠? 사람이 그리 많았던 건 아니지만, 적어도 거기에 있던 모두들 정말 행복해서 여기저기 뛰어다니더군요. 내가 정말 좋아하는 셋 중 하나라고 할 수 있어요. 또 다른 좋아하는 디제이겸 프로듀서를 뽑으라면 French Fries고요.

적어도 저한텐 되게 듣기 좋은 답이에요. 왜냐하면 평소에 이 질문을 하면, 사람들은 특정한 아티스트 이름이나 레이블, 앨범 등을 언급하거든요. 그런데 전 적어도 다양한 디제이들과 믹스셋들에서 영향을 받았어요.
맞아요.. 더구나 가끔은 음악을 오래한 사람들과 이야기할 때 내가 모든 레이블들을 알지 못하기 때문에 이야기를 하기에 어려움이 있어요. 그래서 내가 하는 방법은, 레이블들을 적어서 벽에 붙여놔요. 새로운게 필요하면 그 메모들을 따라가곤 하죠. 아니면 사운드클라우드에 있는 믹스들을 들어요. 그 중에 좋아하는 것들을 찾으려 하고, 웹사이트나 블로그들을 들춰보죠. 새로운게 있는지도 보고요. 모든 걸 기회로 보는거죠. 그렇게해서 정말 이상할정도로 좋은 것들을 찾을 수 있어요.

인터뷰를 어려워하는 사람을 데리고 이정도면 충분히 대화한 것 같네요. 너무 즐거웠어요. 정말 고맙고 또 만나요!

Hey Ligrye, how’s it going? Are you still hang over from last night?
Well, I hate interviews… I don’t have to listen to this recording afterwards, right?

No, no, no…. just relax. I might be posting it, though. [laughter] No, worries, I can’t stand to hear my own voice, too.
Sooo… I feel you’re one of the most active guys in Seoul right now. You seem to be playing everywhere….
I think it’s because it’s summer. In winter it’s pretty quiet and I’m not busy in the winter. I have a few gigs now and then, but even to get people out of their house is really hard. When spring comes, everything starts, everyone’s out. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday…you could throw a party on any day of the week If you have a great concept.

I just received a Sunday’s party invitation from you a few days ago. What’s that about?
Summer Sundays. We started this last year in Itaewon and it was really successful. The concept was music, social and BBQ. We had burgers and hummus platters and so on. It was a good atmosphere for a Sunday. The unfortunate part we only had three parties cause the venue that we had thought it was too crazy for them and the police came and shut us down… Even though Seoul has so many rooftops, there’s bound to be one neighbor that would complain about noise, so you have to be so careful about the location.

Must be hard for you to understand as a South African. You guys have many rooftop parties over there, right?
Yes, the concept of this was based on something that’s happening in South Africa. There are two types in South Africa – one is called ‘Cold Turkey’. It’s a house completely cleared out with just windows and doors and spaces and a huge lounge. People go there on a Sunday and just drink beer, dance and enjoy. It’s also really mixed, old and young and so on… It’s just so nice cause you can sit on the grass or in a lounge.
Then there’s another option on a Sunday – you can go see a live band/djs ‘GOLDFISH’ over looking at the ocean. It’s called ‘Submerge Sundays’. You could see the ships in the background and the nighttime light. Or you could be a bit indoors and have a slight balcony/rooftop view of the ocean and the strip of palm trees. That’s the second option. Some of my best nights back home were on Sundays. Obviously there’s no ocean in Seoul, so a rooftop is the next best option. Last year it was a lot of fun.

Hang on, those party concepts from South Africa sound amazing. Why would you actually leave such a beautiful place? How did you get here?
Well, it was a weird situation because I studied ‘Economics and Organizational Psychology’ just graduated and a friend said : ‘Come to Korea, you’d love this place, it’s so forward thinking. Just come for one year’. I first went ‘No, I will work in the business field, this is what I studied.’ At that time, I was between coming to Korea or working for Philip Morris which was a great opportunity, but then with some convincing I thought I’ll do it – and my friend sorted out everything for me. When I said ‘yes’, two weeks later I was on the flight bound for korea

Wow, that’s awesome. How do like it after all?
I love this place. I’m here for three years now and my first year was a little rough cause I stayed almost three hours out of Seoul, I was the only foreigner in that little village…
Other than that I like the pace of Seoul. It’s fast and it keeps you on things. If you wanna do anything, I think this is the perfect city. If you wanna be a DJ, if you wanna be a photographer, if you wanna be a designer – it’s the perfect city. Hustle hard…

Why do you think that is?
Korea is looking for foreign talents and they’re looking for a different perspective on things. I’ve done street photography at Seoul Fashion Week for the last two years and there’s a common trend here which is all black or monotone, neutral colors. Whereas, if you go to South Africa it’s bright prints, animal patterns – and I know it sounds so cliche because it’s South Africa, but we really do know how to make colors and prints. I think Korea looks on this with a different perspective because it’s so homogeneous. However, trends happen so easily here. So, I just think that if you’re outgoing and you know what you gonna do, Korea is a good place. Learning the language is very important I think, and I think that’s the only thing that’s holding me back a little bit, but so far I’m still enjoying my life here.

Let’s speak about you photography then. Is it true that you’re a photographer for a much longer time than you are a DJ?
I’ve always been interested in parties, music and photography – I wasn’t really exposed to a creative environment in South Africa. It’s kind of an outsider’s perspective, going to exhibition, going to parties, but not thinking as a photographer or thinking as a DJ, you know? That’s what Seoul has done for me – I’ve taken the next step. I don’t consider myself a serious photographer. I just do it cause I really enjoy it. The satisfaction that I get from seeing my work, makes me feel really proud. I don’t care about the photographs greatness. If it’s something I wanna do, I just put it out there. It doesn’t have to make me famous, it doesn’t have to be anything. I’m just happy when it’s out there.

Actually, I first realized that you’re a photographer, when I read that quote by Susan Sontag, saying that to take a picture of people means to violate them. I actually feel like that. I never feel comfortable when someone takes a picture of me. Why did you choose that quote?
It’s just, I feel so fascinated sometimes how different it is here. It’s really different from South Africa. Number one, it’s so safe: you can drink on the streets, you can walk wherever you want to at any time. For me this is just so different and every moment, I just feel like I wanna capture it. And sometimes I’m capturing moments where I think I do violate people cause I am this foreigner just taking something and I’m not asking them, you know? Sometimes I do, but I feel it defeats the focus of what I want to capture if I would ask.
Especially with my film camera, I feel like I only capture moments. It’s nothing really posed.

I just remember a German indie band singing about how photographs can never really capture the feeling or love of a moment. I suppose you would disagree…
Yes, because I feel like it does capture something and it takes you back. There’s this one picture that I have in my apartment for example: I was in Thailand, it was sunset and we were on a train going to a temple. It was so humid and so sticky on the train, no aircon and it was just so hot. There was a foreigner, his head was turned out of the window and he had his headphones in. People were standing and it was the time when everyone was coming from work heading home, too. And there’s just something about this light. So I took the photo and it’s not edited at all, but when I look at it now, I think, damn… it takes me back right there, the same feeling, the same mood – the sunlight in the train at that time.

What I like about this quote is that it is pretty critical. You’re violating someone and that’s not a good thing to do. However, when you talk about this there’s so much passion and love in it. You acknowledge that violation and that might lead you to being more careful.
Well, yeah. When I take a picture, obviously I am careful. I’m scared that someone may respond in a negative way.

So, normally you take these photos quietly and without getting noticed.
Yes, I prefer doing it quietly, even though there are times when I wanted to try to convey something and I kinda have to tweak something a little bit. But I try not to. I try to keep it in its natural element. And the mistakes that you make or the images where you think ,Oh, that’s actually not that great’ in the beginning, later turn out to be the special ones. I just continue to do and I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it.

That kind of hidden and quiet position is pretty much the opposite of a DJ, especially in Korea where everyone is staring at you. Plus, you’re really outgoing as a DJ and always enjoying yourself with the crowd.
Sometimes I have my moments, though. Like last night, It was a little intimate.

Yes, I can totally relate to that. But normally you’re really outgoing, right?
Yes. You know my saying about DJing is, if I can’t dance to it, I don’t think anyone else can. I look at my set and ask myself: ‘Can I find my beat, can I find the rhythm?’ – and if I can’t, I remove that of the playlist.
I don’t consider myself a great DJ, I just love seeing people move and dance and the smiles in their faces.That’s how I could relate it to photography, too. I took something and they weren’t preparing for it, but then they look at it and think ‘wow, I actually like being violated now. Do it again, snap me….’ [laughter]

Did you also play out in South Africa?
I was playing at house parties, not djing. I have an older brother who’s 9 years older than me and he’s also into music. He’s probably the biggest inspiration when it comes to music. I think without him, I wouldn’t know some of the great classics, music of the 90’s and the late 80’s. Most of my old school is from him. He used to be in the clubbing scene a lot and we always used to do house parties. I had my first house party when I was 15. It used to be sooo crazy…

That must be really different from here. There are rarely people throwing parties at their homes in Korea.
Yes, we took everything out of the living room to make the dance floor. We have a massive yard back home and made a BBQ or as we say in south Africa – a braai. It’s the South African version of a BBQ – but much better!! Yeah, and then every year since then we used to have two parties. I never stopped having house parties.

Do you have some South African gems on your mixtape as well?
I feel a lot of pressure because I feel like I should… but I have some African influenced tracks in there. I always try to put in some tribal or South American sound in it that makes you wanna let loose. But I don’t do it because I’m from South Africa, I do it because it makes me wanna move and I feel like it will make move others, too.
That’s my whole logic behind music. You could ask me if I know this DJ or that producer and I might not be able to tell you – but I know when I hear a song that it makes me move. I like to source from everything and then figure out whether it fits in my set or not.

Apart from your brother – do you have any other influences, like artists, bands, songs, albums, whatever?
Songs? Well, one of my biggest hits is so old. It’s Robin S – Show me love. If I have the opportunity, I will always drop that song cause it’s just such a classic. I know, if I play that song back home, people are going crazy, I know if I play it here, people will go crazy. I just like playing around with those classics and everybody’s singing along. It’s fun! Especially when people are being stiff. Just break the ice, man! also my mom for more older classics.

And some newer stuff?
There’s two songs: Julio Bashmore – KONG and Holding on and a DJ producer duo that I discovered recently. Their name is victoria kim and they do classic K-Pop mashups. Just the vocals mainly with that vogue, ballroom house sound with it.
And then a few weeks ago at Cakeshop, one of my best nights was DJ Sliink. I could not leave the floor, I could not stop dancing, I could not… didn’t even wanna leave for cigarette – that’s how good it was. It wasn’t a big crowd, but everybody was just so happy and jumping around and dancing. It was so good – probably one of my best sets. Also one of my other favorite DJs/producer is French Fries

That’s actually quite nice for me to hear, because whenever we ask this question, people just drop names of artists or labels or albums maybe, but I have been more influenced by DJs and mixsets myself…
…I know, I know. And sometimes it’s really hard to talk to people who are in the industry for long time because you don’t know all the labels… this is how I literally do it – I write down labels and I post it on my wall, so I can go back if I’m looking for new stuff and have reference points. But other than that, I go through Soundcloud mixes, try to hear what I like, look on websites/blogs and just see what’s happening, see what’s new and from there give everything a chance. That’s how you discover the weirdest things that are really good.
