안녕하세요, 근황소개좀 부탁드립니다.
12월말부터 최근까지 바이닐 발매 프로모션을 위해 중국, 한국, 일본 투어를 다녀왔어요. 그전엔 태국의 Wonderfruit Festival에 다녀왔구요. 올해초엔 More Rice라는 태국 레이블에서 Ep를 내놓았고, 제가 속한 8 Ball Town에서도 신세하(Xin Seha)씨와 함께 7” 레코드를 발매할 계획입니다.
Mogwaa씨 음악 들어보면 (막연히) 미국에서 잘 먹힐 것 같다는 느낌이 듭니다.
[ㅎㅎ] 사실 프로모션을 제대로 하려면, 제 음악이나 비디오 콘텐츠 같은게 잘 아카이빙 되어있어야 하는데 아직 그 부분은 부족한게 사실입니다. 얼마 전 MMCA에서 공연한 것이 있었는데 그 때 공연영상이 업로드 될 예정이거든요. 앞으로 그런 것들이 필요합니다.
Mogwaa가 추구하는 음악의 색깔(Originality)은 뭔가요?
스스로 fresh한 느낌이 드는 음악을 추구해요. 가령 제 첫 앨범인 Déjà Vu 와 현재 제가 만드는 음악들은 texture가 많이 달라요. 물론 초반의 제 스타일을 더 좋아해주시는 분들도 있지만, 그런 스타일이 제게 더 이상 자극될 만한 게 없다면 굳이 거기에 머물러있을 필요는 없어요.
혹시 테크니컬한 측면에서도 fresh한 것을 찾으시나요?
물론이죠, 꼭 최신의 장비로 연주한다기 보다는 제가 사용해보지 못한 것들을 찾는 편입니다. 내가 안쓰던 악기의 기능을 사용해 본다든지요.
시간이 지날수록 계속 스타일이 변할 수 있다는 건데, 혹시 그 안에서도 변하지 않는 것이 있나요?
Funk, Soul, Reggae, Jazz 느낌은 유지하고 싶어요. 요즘 어떤 사람들은 Balearic이라고 표현하기도 하더라고요.
다른 사람 음악도 많이 듣나요?
초반엔 많이 들었는데, 요즘은 아니에요. 특히 저는 프로듀싱을 해야하니 무의식중에 다른 곡이 reference 처럼 작용하지 않도록 경계해야하거든요.
이번 골목길 믹스테잎은 어떤 곡들로 이루어졌고, 어떤 느낌이라고 소개할 수 있나요?
요즘 바이닐 말고 CD구매를 많이 하는 편인데 최근 산 씨디에 수록된 곡들과 최근 일본에 다녀오면서 사거나 선물받은 음반들 중에서 봄의 기운이 느껴지는 곡들로 선곡을 해보았습니다.
평소 라이브셋을 할 때 가장 신경쓰는 부분은 무엇인가요?
액티브한 퍼포먼스를 보여주려고 노력해요. 악기의 다양한 기능들을 사용한다든지요. 활동 초기에는 에이블턴(Ableton, 소프트웨어)을 활용해서 MR을 깔아놓고 건반만 치는 경우가 있었는데, 그게 너무 퍼포먼스가 약하고 재미가 없어서 지금은 되도록 에이블턴을 사용 안하고 하드웨어 장비들로만 연주하고 있어요.
DJ Set과 다른점이 있다면요?
DJ Set은 track by track이 일반적인데, 제가 하는 라이브는 어느정도의 트랙리스트는 정하고 가지만 드럼, 베이스라인 등 세분화된 레이어들을 동시다발적으로 넣었다 뺐다 하기 때문에 명확한 track의 경계선을 찾기 어렵죠. Set 전체가 한개의 곡이라고 볼 수도 있고요.
그럼 DJ Set으로 플레이할 땐 어떤걸 주로 신경쓰시나요?
댄스플로어의 바이브를 해치지 않는 선곡. 바이널로 많이 플레이하고 싶은데 요즘은 프로듀싱을 더 많이 해서 사실 레코드를 많이 사거나 그러긴 어렵더라구요. [ㅎㅎ]
Mogwaa씨 Soundcloud에 가면 많은 Demo곡들이 있어요, 특히 왠지 영등포 근방에서 찍은 것들을 모티브로 해서 만든 것 같더라고요. 몇 곡 소개해주실 수 있나요?
사실 영등포에 대한 이미지 없이 만든 곡들이 대부분인데 커버 없이 업로드하기는 너무 허전하기때문에 그 과정에서 제가 찍었던 사진을 커버로 쓰고 그것과 연관지어서 제목을 지었습니다. 그래도 그중에서 소개하고 싶은 곡이 있다면, “The Land of Covenent – Saturday Jam” 이란 곡을 소개하고 싶네요. 밤에 지나가다 저 약속의 땅이라는 문구가 너무 인상적이 었어요.
혹시 음악을 시작하게 된 계기가 있나요?
중학교땐 스크래칭 DJ가 되고싶었어요. 그리고 20대 초중반까진 기타를 쳤었어요. 그러다 정신 차려보니 지금이네요. [ㅎㅎ]
요즘 즐겨듣는 앨범 있나요?
Unknown Mobile – Daucile Moon이요. 발레아릭한 음악들인데, 작업방식이 재밌어요. Yahoo! Geo Cities라는 웹 아카이브에서 찾은 MIDI 악보를 이용해서 음악을 만들었어요.
이제 마지막 질문인데요, 혹시 평소 자주 가는 스팟이 있다면 소개해주세요.
다소유. 집과 작업실 사이에 있는 LP바에요. 2004년 오픈 한 곳인데, 사장님이 오대리(Odaeri)님이라고 실험적인 음악 하시는 분이에요. 오가며 자주 들르는 곳입니다.

Hi. Let’s start it casually. How’ve you been these days?
I’ve been touring over China, Korea, and Japan since last December for my vinyl release promotion and just came back. A new EP from More Rice records Thailand just came out, and I’m also planning to release a 7” record with Xin Seha from label 8 ball town.
It’s just a shot in the dark, but I have a feeling that you have a lot of fans in the United states.
[haha] In order to show off more promotion properly, I should’ve archived my sets better, but it’s true that I haven’t posted enough videos or musical contents so far. There’s an upcoming live set video that is recorded from last MMCA(National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) show in November though. I need more of these kind of things to be prepared from now on.
What’s is the originality of the music that you pursue?
I seek a sense of freshness in music. For instance, my first album ‘Déjà Vu’ has a very different texture compared to the music that I make nowadays. Some people prefer my works from early days, but I don’t think you have to stick to that phase if you don’t get inspired from it anymore.
Does that also fall into technical aspects? I mean, do you find freshness also in technical production?
Of course, but it doesn’t mean I use the most updated instruments. I try to find equipments that I haven’t used before, or instruments that I haven’t used for awhile.
It sounds like your style constantly changes through time, but is there a core that never changes nevertheless?
A scent of Funk, Soul, Reggae, and Jazz is what I want to keep. I heard some people say that as ‘Balearic’ these days.
Do you listen to other people’s music a lot?
I used to, but not anymore. I try to keep myself apart from too many references, so it doesn’t show up in my productions unconsciously.
Could you introduce about your mixtape? What are the tracks that you selected?
I purchased a lot of CDs lately rather than vinyls, so I picked some tracks from there, and also selected springlike music from records that I got as a gift in Japan.
What is the element that you care about the most when you perform a live set?
I try to show active performance to the audience. It could be using many functions of one instrument for instance. I used to play an MR through ableton and play the keyboards, but it felt not strong enough and boring so now I try to use as many hardwares as I can and use less of ableton.
How is it different from dj sets?
Djing is basically mixing track after track. When I do live I have a fixed tracklist and would simultaneously control the layers of drum and bassline so technically there’s isn’t a border between each track. The set is one track in whole.
Then what do you think about when you dj?
Selections that wouldn’t disturb the vibe of the dance floor. I want to play more vinyls, but I’m busy making music so I didn’t have time to dig lately [haha].
There are several demo tracks on your soundcloud which feels like it is inspired by scenes from your hometown Yeongdeungpo. Can you introduce some of them to us?
In fact, most of them aren’t motivated by Yeongdeugpo, but were just uploaded with the cover image of the pictures that I took. I felt it’s too vacant to post the tracks without any image, so I also came up with titles that are related to the photos. If I have to pick one, I want to talk about “The Land of Covenent – Saturday Jam.” I was so captivated by that phrase when I was walking through the middle of the night.
Is there a specific reason why you started making music?
I wanted to be a scratch dj since Middle school. I played the guitar until mid 20s. And now I ended up here. [haha]
Is there any albums that you enjoy listening to?
Unknown Mobile – ‘Daucile Moon’. The mood is balearic, but I’m fascinated by the way how it’s made. All the tracks are made by MIDI notes found in a web archive called ‘Yahoo! Geo Cities.’
Lastly, could you recommend any place that you go to often?
There’s an LP bar in the middle of my house and my studio called ‘Dasoyu.’ It’s run by an experimental musician called ‘Odaeri’ since 2004. I go there often after studio work.
